Why Stamford

Located in southwestern Connecticut along Long Island Sound, Stamford is the state's second-most populous city and its largest municipality by area. Situated approximately 38 miles from both Manhattan and New Haven, it forms part of the greater New York City metropolitan region. The city encompasses just over 52 square miles, consisting of roughly 37.6 square miles of land and 14.4 square miles of water.

Stamford features approximately 45 distinct neighborhoods and villages alongside two historic districts. Its coastal area includes several islands in Long Island Sound, such as Cove Island, which functions as a major beach and outdoor recreation destination. The northern section, known as North Stamford, covers the city's largest land mass while having its lowest population density. Stamford shares borders with Greenwich, Darien, and New Canaan in Connecticut, as well as Pound Ridge, New York, to the north.

Originally named Rippowam by the area's Siwanoy Native American inhabitants, the land was transferred via a deed signed on July 1, 1640, between Chief Ponus and Captain Turner of the New Haven Colony. Renamed after Stamford in Lincolnshire, England, the settlement developed waterborne merchandising into a primary 18th-century industry due to its proximity to New York. The community was the site of witch trials in 1692 and later incorporated as a city in 1893. From late 1945 into 1946, a historic strike at the Yale & Locke factory drew national attention and temporarily halted downtown activity.

A massive urban renewal movement during the 1960s and 1970s reshaped the downtown area into a prominent corporate center, creating the largest financial district in the New York metropolitan area outside New York City. The local economy relies heavily on financial services, real estate, technology, healthcare, and retail. Modern development continues in the South End's Harbor Point, an 80-acre waterfront project encompassing residential units, retail stores, office spaces, and a marina.

Visitors to Stamford can explore several cultural and natural attractions located in the northern area of the city. The 118-acre Stamford Museum and Nature Center displays works by Gutzon Borglum, the sculptor of Mount Rushmore who lived in the area for a decade. Nearby, the Fairfield County Astronomical Society operates the Stamford Observatory, featuring a 22-inch telescope. The city also contains the 91-acre Bartlett Arboretum and Gardens, which focuses on botanical collections and science education.

Stamford has a temperate climate with long, warm summers and variable winters that bring an average of 30 inches of snowfall annually. The warm season generally extends from mid-April through early November, providing a long local growing season.
