Why Sterling Heights
Sterling Heights is a major suburban municipality situated in Macomb County, Michigan, located roughly 18 miles north of downtown Detroit. Covering nearly 37 square miles, it ranks as Michigan's fourth-most populous city and the second-largest suburb in the Detroit metropolitan region. The city's geography is predominantly land, with the Clinton River winding through its northeastern section on its path toward Lake St. Clair.
The area was first surveyed in 1818 following the War of 1812 and the 1817 Treaty of Fort Meigs. Initially established as part of Shelby Township and later created as Jefferson Township in 1835, it became Sterling Township in 1838. For over a century, the local economy relied heavily on agriculture, particularly the farming of rhubarb and other produce supplied to nearby Detroit. Improved road networks and the rapid expansion of the region's automotive industry transformed the farming community into a residential hub for factory workers employed by companies like Ford and Chrysler. To comply with state law prohibiting duplicate municipality names, the community added "Heights" to its name when incorporating as a city in 1968.
Over the decades, Sterling Heights developed a diverse cultural fabric shaped by successive waves of international migration. Early arrivals included groups from Eastern Europe, such as Albanians, Bosnians, Croatians, Macedonians, Montenegrins, Poles, Serbians, and Slovenians. Following the 2003 U.S.-Iraqi War, tens of thousands of displaced Iraqi citizens—primarily Chaldean and Assyrian Christians—resettled in the community. This demographic shift established a prominent cultural presence near 15 Mile Road and Ryan Road, earning the surrounding neighborhood the nickname "Little Nineveh."
Visitors and residents navigate the city via a grid of major thoroughfares, including M-59, M-53, Mound Road, and Metro Parkway. A major commercial landmark in the city is Lakeside Mall, which opened in 1976 along the heavily developed M-59 retail corridor. Municipal civic life centers around the Richard J. Notte Sterling Heights City Center near Dodge Park Road and Utica Road, an intersection featuring the first roundabout constructed in Macomb County.
Sterling Heights experiences a humid continental climate characterized by distinct seasonal shifts. Summers feature warm conditions, with temperatures exceeding 90 degrees Fahrenheit an average of 8.6 days each year. Winters are cold, experiencing 39.1 days annually where temperatures fail to rise above freezing, alongside occasional drops to or below 0 degrees Fahrenheit.
