Why Santa Clara

Santa Clara is a prominent city situated in the southern region of the San Francisco Bay Area in California. Located in the center of Silicon Valley, the municipality covers 18.4 square miles of land and is bordered primarily by San Jose, with Sunnyvale and Cupertino situated to its west. The city is widely recognized as a technology hub, housing the corporate headquarters of major technology firms including Intel, Nvidia, and Advanced Micro Devices.

The region was inhabited for millennia by the Tamien tribe of the Ohlone nation prior to European arrival. Spanish colonization led to the founding of Mission Santa Clara de Asís in 1777. Following a period of Mexican governance and eventual incorporation into the United States during the 19th century, the local economy relied heavily on agriculture for approximately a century. Early technological developments, including human glider flights in 1905 and the emergence of the semiconductor industry around 1960, transformed the area's agrarian background into a commercial center. Mid-20th-century urban renewal policies later reshaped the city by removing its original downtown street grid and historic structures.

Visitors to Santa Clara encounter several major sports, educational, and cultural landmarks. The city is home to Levi's Stadium, which serves as the venue and facility headquarters for the San Francisco 49ers football team and hosts large-scale athletic events. Families frequently visit California's Great America amusement park. Higher education and history meet at Santa Clara University, the oldest university in California, which was established on the grounds of the historic 18th-century mission. Cultural offerings in the area include the Santa Clara Convention Center, the Intel Museum, the Triton Museum of Art, the Harris–Lass House Museum, and the Our Lady of Peace Shrine, which features a prominent 32-foot-tall statue.

Geographically, the terrain features three seasonal streams—San Tomas Aquino Creek, Saratoga Creek, and Calabazas Creek—that drain into the southern part of San Francisco Bay. These environments host local wildlife, including coyotes and burrowing owls that utilize ground squirrel burrows in level grasslands. Santa Clara experiences mild winter temperatures and mostly rainless summers. Daily high temperatures in July average 82 °F (28 °C), while January highs average around 58 °F (14 °C), with the majority of precipitation arriving during the winter season.

Transportation throughout Santa Clara is anchored by regional rail and light transit options. The city contains two main train stops, the Santa Clara–Great America station and the Downtown Santa Clara station, providing service via Amtrak's Capitol Corridor, the Altamont Corridor Express, and Caltrain. Local light rail connectivity is provided through stations at Reamwood, Old Ironsides, Great America, and Lick Mill.
