Why Clearwater
Clearwater is a coastal city and the county seat of Pinellas County in Florida, situated west of Tampa and north of St. Petersburg. Positioned between Tampa Bay to the southeast and the Gulf of Mexico to the west, it represents the smallest of the three principal municipalities in the Tampa Bay metropolitan area. The barrier island community of Clearwater Beach fronts the Gulf of Mexico and is separated from the mainland core by the Intracoastal Waterway, connected across the harbor by the elevated Clearwater Memorial Causeway.
The region was originally home to the Tocobaga people. In the 1830s, the United States Army constructed Fort Harrison on a bluff overlooking the harbor as an outpost during the Seminole Wars. Local population growth increased after the Federal Armed Occupation Act of 1842 offered land to armed settlers who cultivated the area. Initially named Clear Water Harbor after natural freshwater springs flowing along the bluff and harbor, the community expanded following the arrival of a passenger railroad in 1888 and the opening of the Belleview Biltmore hotel in 1897. Clearwater officially reincorporated as a city in 1915.
Visitors to Clearwater can explore several notable historic and public features. Cleveland Street forms one of the central historical avenues in the downtown core, which also contains the historic Capitol Theatre, a restored venue that originally opened in 1921. The majority of property in the downtown district is owned by the Church of Scientology, which established its headquarters in the city in 1976. Additional local facilities and sights include Coachman Park, BayCare Ballpark, a Marine Science Center, and the Clearwater Public Library System, which includes a main library equipped with creative arts makerspaces.
Clearwater features a humid subtropical climate situated in a broad transition zone toward tropical weather. The city is warm to hot for most of the year, with very few nights of frost. Most annual rainfall occurs during the wet season from June through September, driven by afternoon thundershowers. The dry season runs from October through May, offering sunny and dry conditions with minimal variation in daily weather.
