Why Pompano Beach

Pompano Beach is a coastal city situated in Broward County, Florida, along the Atlantic Ocean. Positioned directly north of Fort Lauderdale and 36 miles north of Miami, the municipality covers an area of roughly 25.4 square miles, including approximately three miles of oceanfront extending toward the Hillsboro Inlet. The city lies beside the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway and forms a prominent component of the South Florida metropolitan region.

The region was originally inhabited by the Tequesta people before scattered settlers arrived in the late nineteenth century. Documented permanent residential growth began in 1896 with the expansion of the railway. The municipality took its name from the Florida pompano, a native fish caught off the ocean coast, and was officially incorporated in 1908 before merging with its adjacent beach community in 1947. Over the following decades, the city experienced significant population growth, evolving into a major coastal destination with diverse cultural influences.

Characterized by a tropical monsoon climate, Pompano Beach experiences hot, humid summers and warm winters. Its geography along the oceanfront and inland waterways offers ample space for outdoor activities and coastal recreation. Among its unique functional sites is the Pompano Beach Airpark, which serves as the home base for the Goodyear Blimp Spirit of Innovation.

Visitors to Pompano Beach can explore a variety of cultural and historical sites, including the Kester Cottages at the local historical museum, the Blanche Ely House Museum, the Historic Ali Cultural Arts Center, and Bailey Contemporary Arts. The city also features the Jellyfish Museum, local theaters, and two primary shopping destinations: the open-air Pompano Citi Centre and the Festival Flea Market Mall. Community gatherings are anchored by several recurring annual events, such as the Pompano Beach Seafood Festival, the Annual Nautical Flea Market, and the Pompano Beach Holiday Boat Parade.

Public recreation centers around several municipal parks, most notably Pompano Beach Community Park, which houses an aquatic center, athletic fields, jogging paths, and courts for pickleball and basketball. Golf enthusiasts have access to the Pompano Beach Municipal Golf Course, which contains two 18-hole courses called the Palms and the Pines. Additional local green spaces include Kester Park, Harbors Edge Park, Cresthaven Park, Annie Addely Gillis Park, and Scott Meyers Memorial Park.
