Why Murrieta
Murrieta is a residential city situated in the Inland Empire region of southwestern Riverside County, California. Positioned near the center of the Los Angeles-San Diego mega-region, the municipality covers approximately 33.6 square miles, almost entirely composed of land. Its physical landscape is shaped by Murrieta Creek, which flows southeasterly through the valley, and its tributary, Warm Springs Creek. The community is bordered by Menifee and Wildomar to the north, Temecula to the south, and the unincorporated area of French Valley to the east.
The region was originally home to the Luiseño people, who established the village of Avaa7ax on the site. In 1873, a partnership purchased Mexican land grants in the area, after which ranchero Juan Murrieta brought thousands of sheep to graze on the valley meadows. The town took its name from Juan Murrieta and began growing after granting a right-of-way to the California Southern Railroad in 1882. A train depot completed in 1887 linked the settlement to a transcontinental rail network, bringing tourists to the local hot springs. Following the end of train service in 1935, the area reverted to a small country town until the construction of Interstate 15 in the early 1980s triggered suburban development and eventual city incorporation in 1991.
Visitors to Murrieta find numerous outdoor and recreational facilities across its 52 public parks, which include dog parks, sports fields, disc golf courses, a skate park, a community pool, an equestrian park, and natural spaces. Golfing options include the Bear Creek Golf and Country Club, designed by Jack Nicklaus, as well as the Golf Club at Rancho California, designed by Robert Trent Jones, Sr. Families can visit the local Mulligan Family Fun Center for miniature golf, while the municipal Town Square features a two-million-dollar veterans memorial alongside public facility buildings.
Murrieta experiences a Mediterranean climate characterized by dry summers, enjoying an annual average of 263 sunny days and 35 days with measurable precipitation. The area is accessible via Interstate 15 along its western side, Interstate 215 to the east, State Route 79, and historic U.S. Route 395. Regional bus transportation is provided by the Riverside Transit Agency, and general aviation services operate from the nearby French Valley Airport located just east of the city border.
