Why Sandy Springs
Sandy Springs is a city located in northern Fulton County, Georgia, forming part of the Atlanta metropolitan area. As the seventh-most populous city in the state, it is bordered by Atlanta to the south, the Chattahoochee River to the west and north, and the communities of Dunwoody and Brookhaven to the east. The city serves as a major corporate hub, housing the headquarters of several large enterprises, including UPS, Cox Enterprises, Mercedes-Benz USA, Newell Brands, Inspire Brands, and Focus Brands.
Indigenous settlement in the area dates back to around 400 AD, when early inhabitants created trails to reach local freshwater springs. The Creek Muskogee tribe lived in the region during the sixteenth century until gold discoveries forced their departure in the early nineteenth century. Federal land lotteries in 1821 led to permanent settlement, followed by the construction of the Austin-Johnson House in 1842. The town takes its name from a natural spring on land donated in 1851 for a local church. Following major highway construction in the 1960s, the area experienced rapid residential growth and officially incorporated as a city in late 2005.
Visitors to Sandy Springs will find several distinct districts throughout the city. Downtown Sandy Springs, known as City Springs, features a multi-use area built around municipal offices, residential developments, retail spaces, green areas, and a performing arts center. This district also encompasses Heritage Green, which protects the original natural spring that gave the city its name. Another prominent district is Perimeter Center, a major commercial hub. This area features landmark skyscrapers, such as the Concourse towers, colloquially called the King and Queen buildings, alongside the Pill Hill medical cluster, home to healthcare facilities like Northside Hospital and St. Joseph's Hospital.
The western side of the city includes Riverside, a residential district along the Chattahoochee River characterized by hilly, winding roads and old-growth forests. The northern section features the Panhandle, wedged between the river and neighboring communities, as well as the North End and North Springs districts. To the south of Interstate 285 lies South Springs, an area located inside the highway perimeter bordering Atlanta's Chastain Park community. Public green spaces such as Hammond Park offer recreational space within the city.
Sandy Springs experiences a humid subtropical climate. Transportation throughout the region is supported by major roadways, including Interstate 285 and Georgia State Route 400. Public transit is accessible via Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority (MARTA) rail stations, including the Medical Center station, Sandy Springs station, and North Springs station, which serves as the terminus for the Red Line.
