Why Carlsbad Caverns National Park

Situated in the Guadalupe Mountains of southeastern New Mexico, Carlsbad Caverns National Park is a globally recognized destination centered around a massive subterranean limestone system. Located roughly 18 miles southwest of the town of Carlsbad along US Highway 62/180, the park protects a unique geological environment. Originally designated as a national monument in 1923, it was established as a national park in 1930 and recognized as a World Heritage Site in 1995. To preserve its natural habitat from future development, approximately two-thirds of the park area is designated as protected wilderness.

The origins of the cavern complex trace back roughly 250 million years to an ancient inland sea where marine organisms built an extensive Permian reef. Following millions of years of burial and subsequent uplift during the Cenozoic era, sulfuric acid formed when hydrogen sulfide seeping from deep petroleum deposits reacted with oxygenated groundwater. This acidic water aggressively dissolved the limestone, sculpting vast underground chambers. Once the water drained, percolating rainwater and snowmelt deposited dissolved minerals, producing speleothems such as stalactites, stalagmites, columns, draperies, soda straws, and helictites.

Subterranean exploration was famously undertaken in 1898 by a teenager named Jim White using a homemade wire ladder. Among the park's primary highlights is the Big Room, a massive cavern measuring nearly 4,000 feet long and 255 feet high, recognized as the largest cave chamber in North America. Visitors can observe famous spaces and features such as the King's Palace, Queen's Chamber, Green Lake Room, and the Bottomless Pit. The park also encompasses two areas listed on the National Register of Historic Places: the Caverns Historic District and the Rattlesnake Springs Historic District.

Guests can enter the primary cave on foot via a steep natural entrance or take an elevator from the main visitor center down to an underground lunchroom area. In addition to self-guided cave walks, park rangers lead special wild-cave tours to locations like the Hall of the White Giant. Above ground, visitors with permits can engage in backcountry camping. Special events include seasonal bat flight presentations held at an outdoor amphitheater from Memorial Day weekend through mid-October, pre-dawn morning viewings, and evening star parties hosted by rangers.

The region surrounding the visitor center experiences a cool semi-arid climate. Cave exploration remains popular throughout the year, with park visitation averaging around 410,000 people annually. Peak attendance typically occurs on weekends following Memorial Day and the Fourth of July, while free admittance for self-guided tours is offered on select national holidays.
