Why Olympic National Park
Olympic National Park is a federal reserve located on the Olympic Peninsula in Washington State, United States. Attracting over 3.7 million visitors in 2024, the park encompasses three distinct ecosystem categories: subalpine forests and wildflower meadows, temperate rainforests, and a rugged Pacific coastline. These natural landscapes divide into four primary geographic sections: the ocean coast, damp western rainforests, alpine high country, and drier eastern woodlands.
The coastal segment features a narrow 60-mile stretch of sandy beaches, dense timber groves, and massive boulders. Naturally eroded drift timber flows from rivers like the Hoh and settles along the shore, creating striking biological and visual features. Travelers can explore paths such as the nine-mile Ozette Loop, which utilizes wooden boardwalks through coastal cedar swamps, or the short trail to Second Beach with its views of offshore rock formations. Indigenous communities, including the Hoh, Quileute, and Makah, maintain deep historical ties to this shoreline.
At the park's core rise the glaciated Olympic Mountains, formed through tectonic subduction and oceanic plate uplift. The western peaks are dominated by Mount Olympus, which reaches 7,965 feet and holds extensive icy fields like the three-mile Hoh Glacier. Eastward, the mountains form craggy ridges cast in a rain shadow, topping out at Mount Deception's 7,788-foot summit. Geologically, the region features exposed rock formations, including white-veined turbidites and petroleum-scented tectonic mélanges.
Drenching western valleys like the Hoh and Quinault receive more than 12 feet of rain annually, nourishing temperate rainforests filled with ancient coniferous trees like Sitka spruce, Douglas fir, and Western redcedar. Moisture-laden mosses drape the branches of these trees, which include the thousand-year-old Kalaloch Big Cedar. In contrast, the old-growth forests on the eastern side receive significantly less moisture and feature smaller trees with thinner undergrowth.
Because the peninsula's isolated geography served as an ancient glacial refuge, the park shelters endemic species found nowhere else, including the Olympic marmot, Piper's bellflower, and Flett's violet. The protected wilderness also supports black bears, black-tailed deer, cougars, and herds of native Roosevelt elk. Non-native mountain goats, introduced in the 1920s, are actively managed to safeguard indigenous flora.
Initially preserved as Mount Olympus National Monument by President Theodore Roosevelt in 1909, the land was re-designated a national park under President Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1938. It holds international recognition as a World Heritage Site and Biosphere Reserve, with 95 percent of its area protected as the Daniel J. Evans Wilderness. Climatologically, the park splits between a temperate oceanic climate in the west and a warm-summer Mediterranean climate in the east.
