Why Rocky Mountain National Park
Situated in north-central Colorado approximately 55 miles northwest of Denver, Rocky Mountain National Park encompasses over 265,000 acres within the Front Range of the Rocky Mountains. Positioned between the towns of Estes Park to the east and Grand Lake to the west, the preserve is bordered on all sides by national forests and wilderness lands. Established by President Woodrow Wilson in 1915 and named a UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve in 1976, this high-elevation sanctuary protects a landscape defined by dramatic peaks, wooded forests, pristine alpine lakes, and expansive alpine tundra.
The Continental Divide runs directly through the park from north to south, separating drainage basins that flow toward the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans, while the headwaters of the Colorado River originate in the northwest section. Terrain elevations range from 7,860 feet to 14,259 feet at Longs Peak, the park's highest point. More than sixty summits exceed 12,000 feet, including those within the Mummy Range to the north. Past glaciation sculpted the topography, leaving behind rock formations like Lumpy Ridge, small cirque glaciers, 150 lakes, and around 450 miles of rivers and streams.
Human activity in the region dates back to Paleo-Indians who traversed the high passes to forage and hunt, a pattern continued by Ute and Arapaho tribes. Settlers arrived during the mid-19th century, displacing Native populations, and short-lived mining towns emerged in the Never Summer Mountains during the 1870s gold and silver rush. Conservation efforts spearheaded by local advocates like Enos Mills led to national park status in 1915. During the 1930s, the Civilian Conservation Corps constructed Trail Ridge Road, linking the eastern and western sections of the park over high mountain terrain.
Today, the park features 350 miles of trails and five visitor centers, including the park headquarters at Beaver Meadows Visitor Center—a National Historic Landmark designed by the Frank Lloyd Wright School of Architecture. The area experiences a subarctic climate shaped by elevation and mountain weather patterns. Summer temperatures at lower elevations frequently reach the 70s or 80s Fahrenheit, though sudden afternoon thunderstorms are common. Winters bring heavy snowfall, blizzards, and freezing cold, with the western slopes typically receiving deeper snow and less wind than the eastern side.
