Why Norwalk
Norwalk is a coastal city situated in Fairfield County, Connecticut, along the northern shore of Long Island Sound. Positioned within the New York Metropolitan Area and the Western Connecticut Planning Region, it stands as the sixth-most populous city in the state. The municipal area covers roughly 36 square miles, with over a third comprised of water. Its topography is defined by the Norwalk River and its banks, the offshore Norwalk Islands, and a coastal landscape reaching down to sea level.
First settled in 1649 following a 1640 land purchase from Chief Mahackemo of the Norwaake, Norwalk was officially incorporated in 1651. Its name likely stems from the Native American designation Naramauke or an Algonquin word meaning a point of land. Most of the town was burned during the Revolutionary War following the Battle of Norwalk. Throughout the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, the location developed as a major stop on regional railway lines. In 1910, the town combined with South Norwalk, a historic district that later underwent major preservation efforts in the 1970s, establishing the Washington Street Historic District.
Today, Norwalk hosts a variety of major corporate headquarters, including Xerox, Pepperidge Farm, Priceline.com, FactSet, Booking Holdings, Datto, Terex, and Ventus, along with national accounting foundations. Local points of interest include the National Havoc Robot League, while local news coverage is provided by outlets such as News 12 Connecticut.
The city's coastal setting supports extensive outdoor activities, including boating, sailing, fishing, windsurfing, kayaking, and competitive rowing along the inner harbor and Norwalk River. Land recreation includes public and private golf options at Oak Hills Park, Shorehaven Golf Club, and Silvermine Golf Club, as well as sports fields at Calf Pasture Beach. Norwalk is connected by Interstate 95, the Merritt Parkway, and U.S. Routes 1 and 7, with public transportation provided by the Norwalk Transit District and four local Metro-North Railroad stations.
