Why Hawthorne
Hawthorne is a city located in southwestern Los Angeles County, California, forming part of the South Bay subregion within the Los Angeles metropolitan area. Situated just five miles from Los Angeles International Airport, the city is widely recognized as the birthplace of the musical group The Beach Boys. In recent years, Hawthorne has also established itself as a prominent hub for the private space and technology industries, hosting major aerospace enterprises, tech offices, and its own municipal airport.
Geographically, the city is bounded by neighboring communities such as Inglewood and Lennox to the north, Gardena and Athens to the east, Lawndale and Redondo Beach to the south, Manhattan Beach at its southwestern point, and El Segundo to the west. It also encloses the community of Del Aire on three sides. Major transportation corridors frame the city, including Interstate 105 along the northern border—which accommodates the C Line light rail service—and Interstate 405 along the western boundary. Primary roadways serving the area include Hawthorne Boulevard, Rosecrans Avenue, El Segundo Boulevard, Imperial Highway, and Aviation Boulevard.
The region was originally home to the indigenous Tongva tribe prior to becoming part of Rancho Sausal Redondo, a Mexican land grant deeded in 1837. Real estate developers B.L. Harding and H.D. Lombard founded the settlement in 1905 under the Hawthorne Improvement Company, choosing the name in honor of writer Nathaniel Hawthorne because Harding's daughter shared his July 4 birthday. During the 1930s, the community operated as a sundown town enforcing racial restrictions. Mid-century growth was heavily influenced by manufacturing, notably through the Northrop Corporation, which developed military aircraft at its local facility near Northrop Field. That historical industrial site now functions as the primary headquarters for SpaceX.
Cultural sights in the city include the Beach Boys Historic Landmark, which marks the location of the Wilson brothers' childhood home. Motor enthusiasts and industry followers also recognize the area for hosting Tesla's design center at the Hawthorne Municipal Airport. Hawthorne experiences a Mediterranean climate characterized by roughly 263 sunny days annually and limited precipitation, which mostly occurs in winter and spring. August typically registers as the warmest month of the year, while January is generally the coolest.
