Why Greenville

Greenville is the county seat and largest city in Pitt County, North Carolina, situated within the state's inner Coastal Plain along the south bank of the Tar River. Serving as the primary hub for education, healthcare, and entertainment in the region, it stands as the most densely populated city in eastern North Carolina.

Established in 1771 as Martinsborough, the settlement relocated to its present position along the river in 1774. It was renamed Greenesville in 1786 in tribute to Revolutionary War hero General Nathanael Greene, a name later shortened to its modern spelling. Navigable steamboat routes along the Tar River initially supported a booming cotton export trade, which was later surpassed by tobacco marketing and warehousing in the late nineteenth century. In 1907, a co-educational teacher training school was chartered, eventually expanding into East Carolina University and transforming the city into a prominent academic center.

Visitors to Greenville encounter a variety of cultural and educational venues. East Carolina University hosts theatrical and dance productions, musical concerts, lectures, and athletic events featuring its Pirate sports teams at venues like Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium and Minges Coliseum. For visual arts, the Greenville Museum of Art displays local artwork alongside rotating exhibitions and public programming. History enthusiasts can explore numerous sites listed on the National Register of Historic Places, including the College View, Dickinson Avenue, and Tobacco Warehouse historic districts, as well as the Pitt County Courthouse and several historic private homes.

The city also functions as a major regional retail destination, featuring multiple shopping centers such as Greenville Mall, 11 Galleria, University Commons, and the strip centers around Greenville Boulevard, Arlington Boulevard, and Red Banks Road, which house dozens of retail stores and dining options. The community supports diverse local institutions, including two notable Roman Catholic parishes, St. Gabriel of the Sorrowful Mother and St. Peter Catholic Church, and the Jewish congregation Bayt Shalom.

Greenville features a humid subtropical climate defined by hot, sweltering summers with daytime temperatures typically reaching the 90s Fahrenheit and mild to cool winter months during which temperatures seldom fall below freezing.
