Why Greenville

Greenville is the county seat and largest city in Pitt County, North Carolina, situated within the state's inner Coastal Plain along the south bank of the Tar River. Established in 1771 as Martinsborough, the settlement relocated to its present position along the river in 1774. It was renamed Greenesville in 1786 in tribute to Revolutionary War hero General Nathanael Greene, a name later shortened to its modern spelling. Navigable steamboat routes along the Tar River initially supported a booming cotton export trade, which was later surpassed by tobacco marketing and warehousing in the late nineteenth century. In 1907, a co-educational teacher training school was chartered, eventually expanding into East Carolina University and transforming the city into a prominent academic center.
