Why Troy
Troy is an urban municipality situated in Oakland County, Michigan, positioned roughly 15 miles north of downtown Detroit. Encompassing an area of approximately 33.64 square miles—dominated almost entirely by land with a minor portion of water—it stands as the most populous community within Oakland County and the thirteenth-most populous municipality in the entire state of Michigan.
The area's recorded history dates back to 1819 with the first land purchases. A few years later, a settlement called Troy Corners was established around a 160-acre property acquired by Johnson Niles in what is now the north-central portion of the city. Troy Township was officially organized in 1827 and was named by settlers from New York after Troy, New York, and the ancient city of the same name. Portions of the original township were later incorporated into neighboring municipalities, while the remaining territory was incorporated as the city of Troy in 1955. This official city status was designed to protect municipal borders and expand city services during a period of rapid suburban growth driven by residents moving from Detroit.
As a vital economic center for both the automotive and financial sectors, Troy possesses the second-highest total property value in Michigan. The local skyline is distinguished by the Top of Troy, the city's tallest building, which houses offices for PNC Financial Services. For shopping and leisure, the city features two prominent retail destinations: the Oakland Mall and the expansive Somerset Collection, a shopping venue containing more than 180 stores connected by an enclosed skywalk.
For those interested in local heritage, the Troy Historic Village provides a dedicated historic site comprised of ten accessible structures. Visitors can walk through preserved historical buildings including an eighteenth-century schoolhouse and estate, a general store, a blacksmith's shop, a traditional church and pastor's residence, and the original city hall. The city also serves as the regional headquarters for the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America Metropolis of Detroit and contains major religious centers such as Kensington Community Church and Woodside Bible Church.
Navigating and reaching Troy is facilitated by key regional transit infrastructure, including Interstate 75, which runs directly through the city. Public transit options center around the Troy Transit Center, offering connections to municipal buses as well as passenger train transport on Amtrak's Wolverine line. Air travel for general aviation is supported by the Oakland-Troy Airport, an executive aviation facility featuring a paved 3,550-foot runway located near local business and entertainment destinations.
