Why Deerfield Beach
Deerfield Beach is a coastal city situated in Broward County, Florida, approximately 40 miles north of Miami. Encompassing 16.3 square miles, the community forms part of the broader South Florida metropolitan region. It is bordered by the Atlantic Ocean to the east, the Hillsboro River and Boca Raton to the north, Coconut Creek to the west, and Pompano Beach to the south. The area features a waterfront environment encompassing oceanfront stretches, the Hillsboro River, and the Intracoastal Waterway.
The settlement originated in 1890 under the name Hillsborough along the Hillsboro River and was renamed Deerfield in 1898 due to local grazing deer. The construction of Henry Flagler's Florida East Coast Railway in 1896 spurred early growth, establishing the town as an agricultural hub where settlers raised crops such as pineapples, tomatoes, green beans, and squash. To highlight its coastal access to visitors, the municipality officially changed its name to Deerfield Beach in 1939. Much of the city's historical character is reflected in its 1920s Spanish Mediterranean Revival architecture, visible in landmarks such as the 1923 Butler House, the 1920 Old Deerfield School, and the 1926 historic train station.
Oceanfront recreation centers around Deerfield Beach Island, which features a sandy shoreline, a boardwalk along Ocean Way, and the Deerfield Beach International Fishing Pier, originally built of wood in 1952. The coastline is a notable destination for surfing, with stronger waves north of the pier favoring experienced surfers and calmer southern waters accommodating beginners. The beach also functions as a protected nesting site for loggerhead, green, and leatherback sea turtles, utilizing specialized low-intensity lighting to prevent hatchling disorientation.
The city operates dozens of public green spaces, headlined by Quiet Waters Park, which provides walking and biking trails, water skiing, and hosts the annual Florida Renaissance Festival. Additional nature spots include Deerfield Island Park, an island preserve reachable by a free public ferry from Sullivan Park, and the Deerfield Beach Arboretum, which contains over 200 species of global trees and palms. Cultural attractions include the South Florida Railway Museum housed inside the historic train station, the Deerfield Beach Historical Society Museum, and outdoor community events like free jazz concerts and film screenings in local parks.
Deerfield Beach has a tropical climate with a year-round average temperature of 77 °F, featuring warm summers with frequent thunderstorms and milder, drier conditions during the cooler months. Travelers can navigate the region using Broward County Transit buses or access the city via the Deerfield Beach Station, which offers rail connections through Amtrak and Tri-Rail to regional airports and East Coast destinations.
