Why Brooklyn Park
Brooklyn Park is a suburban municipality situated in northern Hennepin County, Minnesota, along the western bank of the Mississippi River. Located directly north of the Twin Cities metro region, it stands as the sixth-largest city in the state. The Mississippi River forms the eastern boundary of the municipality, creating a natural divide from neighboring communities in Anoka County. The area covers approximately 26.5 square miles, consisting almost entirely of land along with a small percentage of water.
First organized by settlers from Michigan in 1858, the area was named in honor of their former hometown of Brooklyn, Michigan. Originally established as Brooklyn Township, the territory split in 1911 when its southeastern community incorporated separately. The remaining area became the Village of Brooklyn Park in 1954 before officially incorporating as a city in 1969. Much of the northern area past 85th Avenue was built after 2000, allowing the community to preserve a unique mix of modern suburban developments, undeveloped fields, and agricultural land.
Outdoor recreation and green space are prominent characteristics of the city, which is designated as a Tree City USA. The local park system features 67 individual parks and a 47-mile network of multi-use trails. Major outdoor areas include the Rush Creek Regional Trail, the northern portion of Palmer Lake Park, and Mississippi Gateway Regional Park, located along the western side of Coon Rapids Dam Regional Park. Families and educational groups frequently visit the historic Eidem Homestead, a working farm from the 1900s that offers insight into the region's agricultural past.
In addition to its parks, Brooklyn Park hosts several post-secondary institutions, including North Hennepin Community College, Hennepin Technical College, and Rasmussen University. The municipality is easily reached via a major roadway network that includes Interstate 94, Interstate 694, US Highway 169, Minnesota State Highways 252 and 610, as well as County Road 81. The area experiences a humid continental climate, featuring distinct seasons throughout the year.
