Why Merced
Merced is a city located in California's San Joaquin Valley and serves as the seat of Merced County. Positioned approximately 110 miles from Sacramento, 130 miles from San Francisco, and 55 miles from Fresno, the community sits near the Merced River, from which it takes its name. Widely recognized as the "Gateway to Yosemite," the city is situated less than two hours by car from Yosemite National Park to the east, as well as Monterey Bay and the Pacific coastline to the west.
First acquiring a post office in 1870 and incorporating in 1889, Merced developed historically around its agricultural surroundings. During World War II, the Merced County fairgrounds functioned as a temporary assembly center where over 4,600 Japanese Americans were detained before being relocated to an internment camp in Colorado. The municipality later became a primary destination for Hmong refugees fleeing Laos during the 1970s and 1980s, adding to the cultural fabric of the community.
Visitors to Merced can explore several prominent historical and cultural sights within the urban center. Notable landmarks include the Mainzer Theater, recognized for its architectural and historical value, and the County Courthouse Museum, constructed around 1889. Cultural institutions in the city also include the Merced Multicultural Arts Center and the County Library. Within short travel distances from the city limits, scenic and historic points of interest include Lake Yosemite, Merced Falls, and the Castle Air Museum, which is located at the former Castle Air Force Base.
Educational institutions are integral to the city's modern profile. In 2005, the municipality welcomed the University of California, Merced, marking the tenth campus in the University of California system and the first research university constructed in the United States in the 21st century. Higher education is also provided locally by Merced College. In addition to these institutions, the local economy relies on agribusiness alongside light manufacturing, printing, warehousing, distribution, packaging, and fiberglass boat building.
Merced experiences a cool semi-arid climate marked by mild, damp winters and hot, dry summers with an average of nearly 100 days reaching or exceeding 90 degrees Fahrenheit. Travelers can reach the region via Amtrak passenger rail service, three bus routes, or air service operating through Merced Regional Airport.
