Why Mission
Mission is a city situated in Hidalgo County in southern Texas, United States. Bordered by the Rio Grande along the Mexico–United States border to its south, the municipality encompasses a total area of 34.1 square miles, almost all of which is land. It forms part of the broader McAllen–Edinburg–Mission and Reynosa–McAllen metropolitan areas, sitting directly west of McAllen, south of Palmhurst, and east of Palmview.
Travel through the region is anchored by major road connections. Interstate 2 and U.S. Route 83 cross south of the city center, offering direct access east to downtown McAllen five miles away and Harlingen forty-one miles away. To the west, Interstate 2 reaches its end seven miles past the city, while U.S. Route 83 continues thirty-four miles to Rio Grande City.
Mission shares in regional economic growth, supported locally by the Mission Economic Development Corporation. Renowned for its agricultural output, the city has been recognized as the Home of the Ruby Red grapefruit since 1921 and serves as the location for the Texas Citrus Exchange. Each year, the community celebrates this heritage with the Texas Citrus Fiesta Parade along Conway Avenue, displaying floats adorned with fruit alongside local bands, public safety departments, and municipal officials. Fifteen miles north, the deactivated Moore Air Force Base holds the historic First Lift Station of the Mission Canal Company, which once provided irrigation to 15,000 acres of farmland across the Rio Grande Valley.
Educational options in the city are provided by several public entities, including the Mission, Sharyland, and La Joya Independent School Districts, as well as magnet institutions managed by the South Texas Independent School District. Secondary education is also available at San Juan Diego Academy, a Catholic high school operated by the Roman Catholic Diocese of Brownsville. Residents are served by the Speer Memorial Library, a 48,760-square-foot facility. Originating from a civic league founded in 1914, the library moved between local municipal and financial sites before opening a dedicated building designed by architect Warren Suter in 1977, which underwent subsequent expansions in 1988 and 2005.
The city is connected to regional communications through multiple FM radio stations and maintains official sister city relationships with several municipalities in Mexico as well as Almolonga, Guatemala. Mail services are managed by the United States Postal Service across several local ZIP codes.
