Why Rancho Cordova
Rancho Cordova is a city situated in the Sacramento Valley within Sacramento County, California. Part of the broader Sacramento Metropolitan Area, this community rests on largely level terrain at an elevation of roughly 118 feet above sea level. The city covers approximately 34.9 square miles, consisting almost entirely of land alongside a small area of water. Recognized as a two-time All-America City Award recipient, Rancho Cordova blends a prominent regional history with modern residential and commercial districts.
The area's recorded history traces back to 1844, when Mexican Governor Manuel Micheltorena granted 35,000 acres along the south bank of the American River to entrepreneur William Leidesdorff. During the mid-19th-century California Gold Rush, placer mining occurred throughout the vicinity. As prospectors traveled east from Sacramento toward the foothill mines, a network of inns and way stations emerged at regular one-mile intervals along primary travel routes such as Folsom Boulevard, Coloma Road, and White Rock Road. Stops including Magnolia House and 15 Mile House served as important remount stations for the Pony Express.
Following the Gold Rush, the region developed a prominent agricultural economy built around orchards and vineyards. The community's name derives from the historic Cordova Vineyard, which drew inspiration from the Córdoba region of Spain. Mid-20th-century housing developments transformed former agricultural lands, beginning around Folsom Boulevard and Zinfandel Drive, and a local post office officially established the name Rancho Cordova in May 1955. Many area streets still bear the names of wine grape varieties and international wineries in honor of this heritage. Residents later voted to officially incorporate the community as a city in 2003.
Visitors to Rancho Cordova can spot various historical landmarks linked to its early transit and farming past. Near the overpasses for Highway 50 and the light rail, the old Brighton Station building sits on the south side of Folsom Boulevard. Farther along the route stands the historic Mills Station building, constructed in 1911 as a commercial complex that originally housed a store, tavern, ballroom, and post office. On White Rock Road, a commemorative brick cairn marks the former location of the 15 Mile House stage stop.
Rancho Cordova features a hot-summer Mediterranean climate with dry, warm summers and cool, rainy winters. Average daily high temperatures reach 92.6 degrees Fahrenheit in July and around 56.0 degrees Fahrenheit in January, with most of the annual 18.14 inches of rainfall occurring between December and March. Regional access is provided by U.S. Route 50 and State Route 16, while public transportation includes Sacramento Regional Transit buses and the Gold Line light rail system. The municipality also maintains pedestrian sidewalks, shared-use paths, and designated truck routes across the city.
