Why Kissimmee

Kissimmee is the seat of Osceola County in Central Florida, situated along the northwestern bank of Lake Tohopekaliga. Drained by the Kissimmee River, the city forms a major part of the broader Orlando metropolitan region. It features a humid subtropical climate, bringing hot, humid summer months alongside generally mild, dry, and sunny winter conditions.

Settled prior to the Civil War and initially known as Allendale, the community was incorporated as Kissimmee in 1883. Its early growth was fueled by Hamilton Disston's large-scale land drainage efforts, local steamboat construction, and the arrival of the South Florida Railroad, which transformed the settlement into a regional transit center. Following economic downturns, severe freezes in the late 19th century, and the decline of steamboat traffic, the local economy relied heavily on open-range cattle ranching. Ranching dominated until 1971, when the opening of nearby Walt Disney World triggered a massive shift toward tourism and rapid commercial development.

Downtown Kissimmee sits near the intersection of U.S. Highways 17/92 and 192, centered along Main, Broadway, and Emmett streets. The district consists mostly of two- and three-story historic residences, local shops, and eateries, anchored by the historic Osceola County Courthouse. Nature and outdoor recreation center around Lake Tohopekaliga and Shingle Creek, which is regarded as the headwaters of the Everglades. Visitors can kayak or canoe along Shingle Creek from Steffe Landing down to the lake, or explore sections of the planned Shingle Creek Regional Trail for bicycling.

Local sights include Kissimmee Lakefront Park, Makinson Island, the Monument of States, Old Town, and Orange World. Entertainment and athletic events are held at Osceola Heritage Park, which houses the Silver Spurs Arena—home court for the Osceola Magic—and Osceola County Stadium. Regional transit is facilitated by a central multi-modal hub offering Amtrak, SunRail commuter rail, Greyhound, and Lynx bus services, while general aviation is served by the Kissimmee Gateway Airport.
