Why Cedar Park
Cedar Park is a suburban city situated roughly 16 miles northwest of downtown Austin, Texas. The municipality covers approximately 25.6 square miles, primarily within Williamson County alongside a minor area extending into Travis County. The town is traversed from north to south by U.S. Route 183 and the 183A Toll Road, while primary east-west thoroughfares include Whitestone Boulevard and Brushy Creek Road.
Archaeological findings at the local Wilson-Leonard site indicate continual human presence in the area dating back to around 5000 BC, with Native American groups such as the Tonkawa, Lipan Apache, and Comanche inhabiting the region prior to 19th-century European settlement. Originally known as Running Brushy after a spring that formed a nearby creek, the community developed around a ranch established by George and Harriet Cluck in 1873. Following the completion of the Austin and Northwestern Railroad in 1882, the settlement was briefly named Bruggerhoff before Emmett Cluck changed it to Cedar Park in 1887. Early day-trip leisure developed in 1892 with the construction of a half-acre strolling park near the train depot, which drew visitors from Austin. The town eventually incorporated in 1973 following decades of suburban growth outward from Austin.
A primary destination within the city is the H-E-B Center, a multipurpose indoor arena completed in 2009 at the corner of New Hope Drive and the 183A Toll Road. The venue hosts live entertainment alongside professional sports, serving as the home court and rink for the Texas Stars hockey team and the Austin Spurs basketball team. For athletic recreation, Cedar Park also features a 15,000-square-foot public skate park facility opened in 2010, which includes a large bowl, a mini bowl, and a modern street course.
Beyond its venue options, Cedar Park offers civic and educational amenities, including the Cypress Creek campus of Austin Community College and the Cedar Park Regional Medical Center, which opened in 2007. Residential areas in the city are served primarily by the Leander Independent School District, with eastern and southern neighborhoods served by the Round Rock Independent School District.
