Why Auburn
Auburn is the largest city in eastern Alabama, located in Lee County, and a central municipality within the Auburn-Opelika Metropolitan Area. Recognized as a historic college town, it is widely known by its unofficial nickname, The Loveliest Village on the Plains, derived from a line in Oliver Goldsmith's poem The Deserted Village. The city is home to Auburn University, the highest-ranked academic institution in the state, which plays a central role in the community's identity and development.
The region features a remarkably diverse landscape due to its location on the Fall Line, where the Piedmont plateau meets the coastal plain. Terrain in the west and southwest consists of rolling plains and pine-forested coastal soils, while the north contains rugged hills, dense forests, and deep hollows. To the south, Chewacla State Park contains the southernmost exposure of the Appalachian Mountains, marked by sharp peaks and steep elevation shifts. Waterways across the city are primarily drained by the Chewacla, Saugahatchee, and Sandy Creek systems.
First inhabited by the Creek people, the area was opened to settlement following the 1832 Treaty of Cusseta. Settlers led by Judge John J. Harper arrived in 1836 to build an educational and religious center, leading to the official incorporation of Auburn in 1839. In 1856, the East Alabama Male College was chartered, eventually reopening as a land-grant institution after the Civil War and later becoming Auburn University. The city experienced significant expansion following World War II, bolstered by the construction of Interstate 85 and later industrial recruitment.
Today, Auburn offers a combination of collegiate history, commercial districts, and outdoor recreation. The historic university campus forms a major focal point, complemented by local retail destinations such as the Auburn Mall. Outdoor recreation is centered around Chewacla State Park's unique geological features and forested surroundings, as well as the scenic creek networks that run through the area. University athletic events, particularly home football games, also draw visitor activity to the city.
Auburn experiences a humid subtropical climate marked by long, hot, and humid summers, mild winters, warm autumns, and early springs. Rainfall averages over 52 inches annually, though a drier period occurs in late summer and early fall. Severe thunderstorms are common between late winter and early summer, and the area occasionally experiences fringe effects, including heavy rains and strong winds, from Gulf Coast tropical storms and hurricanes.
