Why Jinhua
Jinhua is a prefecture-level city situated in the central-western portion of Zhejiang province in eastern China. Positioned along the Jinhua River—also known as the Wu River—its waterways drain into the Qiantang River system toward Hangzhou Bay. The territory shares borders with Hangzhou to the northwest, Shaoxing to the northeast, Taizhou to the east, Lishui to the south, and Quzhou to the southwest. Environmentally rich in red soil and woodlands, the area features a humid subtropical climate defined by four distinct seasons. Summers are hot and muggy, while winters are chilly and cloudy with intermittent snow. Heavy rainfall peaks in June during the monsoon plum rain season.
Historically serving as a county under Shaoxing starting in the second century BC, the area received the name Jinhua during the Sui dynasty in AD 598. The current urban footprint and surrounding walls trace back to the Yuan dynasty in 1352. Local heritage is strongly tied to Daoist traditions, particularly the fourth-century figure Huang Chuping, a revered holy man whose descendants still reside in the region. Sites like Wuyang Shan, or Reclining Sheep Mountain, are tied to legends of his spiritual practice. The area has long functioned as a regional processing and distribution hub for forestry and agricultural goods such as rice and bamboo.
Visitors can observe traditional local building techniques known as Wu-school architecture. Reflecting Confucian principles of harmony and balance, these Ming and Qing dynasty structures feature symmetrical designs around a clear central axis, expansive courtyards, open halls, and distinctive horse-head walls. Jinhua is also recognized for its diverse local handicrafts. Regions within the municipality specialize in specific trades, including Dongyang wood carving and bamboo weaving, Pujiang crystal carving and lace purling, and Yongkang hardware crafts.
Points of interest across the municipality include locations linked to Daoist traditions, a historical palace constructed for the Dukes of the Taiping Heavenly Kingdom, and modern installations. Along the banks of the Yiwu River, the Jinhua Architecture Park exhibits seventeen individual pavilions designed by a collection of international and Chinese architects. Higher education institutions like Zhejiang Normal University also form a significant part of the municipal landscape.
Culinary culture in Jinhua is widely celebrated for Jinhua ham, a cured pork product with a 900-year legacy. Recognizable by its lute-like shape and yellow skin, the meat is prepared in winter, fermented through summer, and prized for its aromatic red flesh. Another regional food tradition is Yongkang Roumaibing, a filled meat patty made in either large thin cuts or smaller thick varieties stuffed with vegetables, tofu, or pork. Travelers can access the region via major rail hubs such as Jinhua and Yiwu stations, regional expressways, Yiwu Airport, and the Jinhua Rail Transit metro system.
