Why Yancheng

Yancheng is a major prefecture-level coastal city situated in the eastern part of Jiangsu Province, China. Holding the largest administrative territory in the province, it shares borders with Lianyungang to the north, Huai'an to the west, Yangzhou and Taizhou to the southwest, and Nantong to the south, while facing the Yellow Sea to the east. The city features roughly 582 kilometers (362 miles) of coastline, accounting for more than half of Jiangsu's total. This shoreline has steadily expanded eastward over time due to the ongoing deposition of silt carried by the Yangtze, Huai, and Yellow rivers.

The region's history spans over two millennia, beginning in 119 BC during the Western Han dynasty when the settlement was named Yandu County. Meaning "Salt City," Yancheng derived its name from the surrounding salt harvest fields. Over the centuries, it was the home of prominent figures such as the 12th-century statesman Fan Zhongyan and the author Shi Nai'an. The area was also a key location during the Chinese Civil War in the 1930s and 1940s, where the revived New Fourth Army was based, an era commemorated today by local monuments. The modern prefecture-level city was officially established in January 1983.

Visitors to Yancheng can explore vast outdoor areas, including coastal wetlands and salt marshes. These protected ecosystems serve as habitats for rare and endangered wildlife, such as Père David's deer and the red-crowned crane. Within the central urban districts of Tinghu and Yandu, a popular food street along East Road offers numerous dining options housed in buildings featuring traditional Huizhou architecture.

Yancheng features a humid subtropical climate influenced by the East Asian Monsoon. Average monthly temperatures range from 1.7 °C (35.1 °F) in January to 26.9 °C (80.4 °F) in July, with an overall annual average temperature of 14.68 °C (58.4 °F). The city receives around 1,002 millimeters (39.4 inches) of rainfall annually, with the majority of precipitation concentrated between June and August.

Travel to and around Yancheng is facilitated by a comprehensive transport network. Drivers can access the city via National Highway 204 alongside the G15, G1515, and G1516 expressways, while train passengers utilize the Xinyi-Changxing Railway. Local public transit includes a dedicated Bus Rapid Transit network and an Autonomous Rail Rapid Transit system. For air travel, Yancheng Nanyang International Airport provides direct connections to domestic cities like Shanghai and Beijing, as well as international destinations including South Korea, Japan, Taiwan, and Hong Kong.
