Why Hengyang

Hengyang is the second-largest municipality in Hunan Province, China, spanning an area of more than 15,000 square kilometers along the Xiang River roughly 160 kilometers south of Changsha. Historically known as the "Bright Pearl in Southern China" and nicknamed "Wild Goose City" after the migrating birds that once rested there, the area features both older core quarters and newer administrative districts developed with modern housing estates.

The city serves as a major industrial center and transport hub within southern China. Local manufacturing produces chemicals, textiles, paper, processed foods, and equipment for agriculture and mining, while nearby mines yield lead, zinc, coal, and tin. Hengyang is also a key educational base in the province, hosting institutions such as the University of South China, Hengyang Normal University, the Hunan Institute of Technology, and the Hengyang branch of the Hunan University of Technology.

Formerly named Hengzhou, the city operated as a prefectural capital during the Tang Dynasty and experienced various political shifts over the centuries. It briefly served as the seat of Wu Sangui's imperial court in 1678 and was later the location of the Battle of Hengyang during World War II. The region is the birthplace of notable historical figures, including the revolutionist Luo Ronghuan and the scholar Wang Fuzhi. Local culture includes a native form of Old Xiang Chinese that preserves archaic linguistic traits, alongside dozens of recognized national and provincial intangible cultural heritage programs.

While World War II caused extensive damage to the city, several historical structures have been reconstructed. Prominent local landmarks include the Shigu Academy, the Dragon Tower, the Laiyan Pagoda, the Nantai Temple, and the Confucian School situated on Dongzhou Island. In addition, Mount Heng, one of China's Five Sacred Mountains, is located 45 kilometers north of the city proper.

Hengyang has a humid subtropical climate with four distinct seasons. Spring experiences heavy rain, summer is long, hot, and humid, autumn brings pleasant and relatively dry weather, and winter is brief but cold with light, frequent precipitation. Monthly average daily temperatures range from 6.0 °C in January to 29.8 °C in July. As a major transportation junction connecting highway, rail, and river traffic, the city is accessible via national expressways, National Highways 107 and 322, two primary bus terminals, Hengyang Nanyue Airport, and major train stops including Hengyang station and Hengyang East station.
