Why Yueyang
Yueyang is a prefecture-level city positioned along the eastern shores of Dongting Lake and the Yangtze River in the northeastern corner of Hunan Province, China. Historically recognized by names such as Yuezhou and Baling, the prefecture covers an administrative territory of 14,896 square kilometers, with the city proper occupying 304 square kilometers. As Hunan's only international trade port city, Yueyang functions as an important port and maintains the second-largest economy in the province after the capital, Changsha.
Human settlement in the area dates back more than 3,000 years. During the Spring and Autumn and Warring States periods, the region was called Ximi under the Chu state. In 210 AD, Sun Wu established the prefecture of Hanchang during the Three Kingdoms era. Under the Song dynasty, the location was fortified with walls six point four kilometers in circumference and became the seat of the Yueyang military prefecture, originating its current name. In 1852, Taiping rebels captured the city during their advance along the Yangtze River valley toward Nanjing, and the site officially became Yueyang County in 1911 upon the founding of the Republic of China.
The city's primary historic sight is the Yueyang Tower, an ancient structure located on the banks of Dongting Lake. Recognized alongside the Pavilion of Prince Teng and the Yellow Crane Tower as one of the Three Great Towers of Jiangnan, it serves as a major destination for visitors. Dongting Lake itself forms another prominent natural highlight of the area. The local regional cuisine is notably represented by Dongting Lake silver fish.
Administratively, Yueyang includes three urban districts—Yueyanglou, Junshan, and Yunxi—alongside the county-level cities of Miluo and Linxiang, and the counties of Yueyang, Huarong, Xiangyin, and Pingjiang. River crossings across the Yangtze are provided by the Jingyue Yangtze River Bridge and the Dongting Lake Bridge, while regional air access is available via Yueyang Sanhe Airport. The municipality also maintains sister city relationships with international communities in Japan, the United States, Canada, Bulgaria, Australia, and Brazil.
