Why Pingdingshan

Pingdingshan, situated in central Henan province, China, is a prefecture-level city also known by the historic title of Eagle City. The name Pingdingshan translates to mountain with a flat top, inspired by a nearby plateau featuring a distinctly level crest. Its secondary moniker dates back two millennia to the Spring and Autumn period, when a small royal territory called Ying occupied the area, taking advantage of a name that shared its pronunciation with the word for eagle. Established as a prefecture-level municipality in 1957, the city encompasses four districts, two county-level cities, and four counties, sharing borders with Zhengzhou to the north, Luoyang to the west, and several other Henan municipalities.

The geography of Pingdingshan transitions from the Funiu Mountains running through its western section to the sprawling North China Plains across its eastern territory. The landscape is heavily defined by its rich water network, boasting more than 30 flowing rivers alongside 163 lakes and reservoirs. Significant water bodies in the area include the Baiguishan, Zhaopingtai, Yanshan, Shimantan, and Gushitan reservoirs, providing the region with an abundance of natural aquatic resources compared to many other inland destinations.

Home to a diverse population, Pingdingshan hosts dozens of recognized ethnic minority groups, with the Hui people forming the largest minority community alongside notable Manchu and Mongol populations. Local cultural administration includes dedicated ethnic townships such as Mazhuang in Ye County and Yaozhuang in Jia County. The region's historical heritage is reflected in sites like the China Gospel Fellowship Church, which served as a meeting venue for Deng Xiaoping in 1948 and later as a memorial hall, alongside official religious structures representing Buddhist, Taoist, Islamic, Catholic, and Protestant traditions across the municipality.

Visitors to the region can explore a wide range of natural and historic attractions. Mount Yao, located in nearby Lushan County, is a prominent mountain site home to the Spring Temple Buddha, constructed in 2002 as the second largest statue in the world. Nearby, Thrush Valley covers 30 square kilometers and derives its name from its native bird population; it features Cuckoo Lake, often referred to as the pocket of the Three Gorges. Additional cultural landmarks throughout the city include Xiangshan Temple, Qizu Pagoda, the Sansu Tombs, the Ma Street Book Club, the Pingdingshan Museum, and the Ruguan Kiln Ruins Museum.

Historically recognized for its extensive mineral wealth, Pingdingshan contains one of China's largest coalfields, earning it a reputation as a central energy hub. Beyond coal, the municipality holds vast reserves of salt and limestone, forming a cornerstone for local salt extraction and provincial cement production, alongside deposits of iron, sodium, manganese, aluminum, fluorite, and gypsum. Today, the city maintains international ties as a twin town to municipalities in South Korea, Brazil, and Russia.
