Why Yibin
Yibin is a prefecture-level city situated in southeastern Sichuan Province, China, at the southern margin of the Sichuan Basin. Spanning 13,283 square kilometers, it lies at the confluence where the Min and Jinsha Rivers join to form the Yangtze River, known downstream as the Chang Jiang. Per the 2020 census, Yibin had a population of 4,588,804 inhabitants, with 2,158,312 residing within its three built-up urban districts. It borders Luzhou, Zigong, Leshan, Liangshan Yi Autonomous Prefecture, and Zhaotong in Yunnan.
Human settlement in the area dates back at least 4,000 years, marking it as a historical birthplace of ancient Bashu culture. It became a county during the Han dynasty and was known as Xuzhou Commandery during the Ming and Qing eras, often romanized as Suifu or Suchow. The city is associated with historical figures such as the anti-Japanese hero Zhao Yiman and is featured in literature such as Cao Wenxuan's Dragonfly Eyes.
Yibin has a monsoon-influenced humid subtropical climate with year-round high humidity, short mild winters, and long hot summers. Monthly average temperatures range from 7.9 °C in January to 26.9 °C in July and August, with an annual mean of 18.03 °C. Rainfall is concentrated in July and August, while frost is rare across a 347-day frost-free period. Receiving only 1,018 hours of bright sunshine annually, Yibin ranks among the least sunny Chinese cities. Spring generally experiences sunnier daylight than autumn.
The region's economy relies on electronics, food products, power generation, paper, silk, and leather, supported by surrounding farmland growing rice, barley, tea, oil seeds, and sesame. Yibin is famous for Wuliangye, a sorghum-based distilled spirit produced by the state-owned Wuliangye Group. Local food specialties include Yibin Burning Noodles, Lizhuang White Meat, Junlian Peppercorn Chicken, Grape Well Cold Cake, Gaoxian Hotpot, Nanxi Dried Tofu, and Hongqiao Pig Cake.
Points of interest include the Bamboo Sea in Changning County, the Xingwen Stone Forest, local hot springs, and the Southern Silk Road Never Sleeps City in Xunsi Town. Cuiping Mountain Park, located west of the main river junction in Cuiping, provides panoramic urban views. The city hosts higher education centers like Yibin University and Yibin Vocational and Technical College alongside several branch campuses. Transportation is provided by expressways, railways, natural waterways, ten Jinsha River bridges, three Chang Jiang bridges, an Autonomous Rapid Transit system, and Yibin Wuliangye Airport.
