Why Mianyang
Mianyang is the second-largest prefecture-level city in China's Sichuan province, situated in the northwestern region of the Sichuan Basin along the upper and middle reaches of the Fu River. Covering an area of over twenty thousand square kilometers in north-central Sichuan, the administrative region encompasses three urban districts, five surrounding counties, and the county-level city of Jiangyou. It shares borders with several neighboring prefectures, including Deyang, Suining, Nanchong, Guangyuan, and the Ngawa Tibetan and Qiang Autonomous Prefecture, as well as Gansu Province to the north.
With a recorded history extending back more than 2,200 years, the settlement was originally organized as a county in 201 BCE by Emperor Gaozu of the Han Dynasty. Formerly called Fuxian and Mianzhou, the district developed advanced agricultural practices during the Qin and Han periods. Due to its strategic location, the area historically served as a critical military stronghold that provided a natural defense for the provincial capital of Chengdu. Culturally, the territory is recognized as the hometown of the celebrated classical poet Li Bai and contains historical artifacts and sites linked to the Three Kingdoms era.
In contemporary times, Mianyang has developed into a major national hub for scientific research, electronic technology, and industrial development. The region hosts numerous prominent research entities and defense institutions, including the China Academy of Engineering Physics and the China Aerodynamics Research and Development Center. It is also an educational center home to many institutions of higher learning, such as the Southwest University of Science and Technology and Mianyang Normal University, as well as a specialized regional Nuclear Medical Imaging Data Center created for medical diagnostic research.
The locality experiences a mild, humid subtropical climate influenced by monsoons, featuring four clearly defined seasons. Winters are brief, foggy, and cool with minimal precipitation and rare snowfall, registering a January average temperature around five degrees Celsius. Summers are long, hot, and humid, with maximum temperatures frequently rising above thirty degrees Celsius. Over seventy percent of the annual rainfall occurs during heavy summer downpours between May and September, and the area generally experiences low annual levels of direct sunshine.
Mianyang is connected to broader regional transportation routes by land and air. It sits on the primary transit corridor running between Xi'an and Chengdu, linked by the Baocheng Railway as well as major highways including the G5 Beijing–Kunming Expressway and the G93 Chengyu Ring Expressway. Air access is provided through Mianyang Nanjiao Airport, which operates direct flights to major Chinese urban centers including Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, and Xi'an.
