Why Taizhou
Taizhou is a city located along the northern bank of the Yangtze River in south-central Jiangsu province, eastern China. Situated on the Jianghuai Plain where the Yangtze River meets the Grand Canal, it is bordered by Yangzhou to the west, Yancheng to the north, and Nantong to the east. The city covers a total area of 5,793 square kilometres and administers multiple urban districts, including Hailing, Jiangyan, and Gaogang, alongside surrounding county-level divisions.
Established no later than the second century BCE under the ancient name Hailing, Taizhou has a long recorded history. Over centuries, changing river sedimentation expanded the regional landmass, and the city developed into an important administrative center for coastal salt production. In the sixteenth century, local scholar Wang Gen led lectures at Anding Academy, giving rise to the populist Taizhou School of philosophy. The city also holds significance in modern history as the location where the East China Military Region Navy was founded at Baima Temple in April 1949, earning it recognition as the birthplace of the Chinese navy.
Visitors to Taizhou can experience several cultural and natural attractions. In the town of Qintong, Xique Lake hosts the annual Qintong Boat Festival during the Qingming period in early April, featuring theatrical shows, lion dances, and dragon dances held aboard gathering vessels. The area is also home to the Père David's Deer Reserve and the eco-agricultural destination of Heheng village. Cultural landmarks within the city include Mei Lanfang Garden, situated across from the Old Street area, and the Navy Birthplace Museum.
Taizhou serves as an established industrial and commercial hub within the Yangtze River Delta. Traditional light industries include flour milling, textile manufacturing, and fishing net production tied to local agriculture. In recent decades, modern enterprise zones have expanded, notably China Medical City in the southern Hailing district, which houses hundreds of domestic and international pharmaceutical firms and research centers.
oceanic and monsoonal influences give Taizhou a humid subtropical climate with cold, damp winters and hot, rainy summers, with the heaviest precipitation occurring from June through August. The city is accessible via major highway routes such as the G2 Beijing–Shanghai Expressway and regional expressways, connected across the river by the Taizhou and Jiangyin Yangtze River bridges. Rail travel is provided by the Nanjing–Qidong and Xinyi–Changxing railways, supplemented by direct long-distance buses from Shanghai and Nanjing.
