Why Zhongshan
Zhongshan is a prefecture-level city situated in Guangdong province along the western shore of the Pearl River Delta, south of Guangzhou and north of Zhuhai. Positioned slightly south of the Tropic of Cancer, its landscape features northern alluvial plains and a southern coastal hill range. The city's peak elevation reaches 531 meters at the main summit of the Wugui Hills. Originally called Xiangshan, or "Fragrant Mountain," after the aromatic flowers blooming in nearby slopes, the region was renamed in 1925 to commemorate Sun Yat-sen, the founding leader of modern China born in the local village of Cuiheng.
Centuries ago, much of the area was submerged within the river estuary, gradually filling with alluvial deposits over time. By the Northern Song dynasty in 1082, a fortified settlement named Xiangshan was established, later becoming a county supported by sea salt production. Land formation expanded significantly through the Ming and Qing dynasties as embankments were built to protect agricultural fields. The territory experienced notable conflict during the Opium Wars, Japanese military occupation, and the Chinese Civil War before coming under the control of the People's Republic of China in 1949.
Visitors to Zhongshan can explore a variety of urban parks, wide avenues, and historic sites. Sunwen Road West in the old town core contains a pedestrian area with restored 1920s treaty port architecture. Nearby Zhongshan Park features the seven-story Fufeng Pagoda constructed in 1608, alongside a pavilion honoring Sun Yat-sen. Elsewhere, Sunwen Memorial Park displays a massive bronze statue of the leader. Historic educational institutions and soaring commercial skyscrapers, including the dual towers of the International Finance Center, further shape the city's built landscape.
The area encompasses diverse specialized satellite towns, historic leisure spots, and natural reserves. Xiaolan Town is renowned across southern China for its dedicated chrysanthemum cultivation displayed throughout streetscapes and garden pavilions. Sanxiang Town offers natural hot spring resorts positioned over a regional thermal reservoir, as well as a local culinary specialty of glutinous rice noodles with over two centuries of history. To safeguard native ecology, green spaces such as the Zhongshan Tianxin Forest Park provide accessible outdoor environments.
Zhongshan experiences a humid subtropical climate with warm, humid weather throughout most of the year, averaging 22 °C with heavy rainfall primarily occurring between April and September. Linguistically, Cantonese is widely spoken alongside numerous local dialects. Public transportation includes a comprehensive municipal bus system with Mandarin and Cantonese route announcements, as well as English notices on fast-transit vehicles.
