Why Jilin City
Located in the central area of Jilin Province in northeastern China, Jilin City is the second-largest municipality and former capital of the province. It holds the unique distinction of being the only major city in the nation to share its name with its surrounding province. Bisected and largely encircled by the Songhua River, the destination is widely referred to as the River City and co-hosted the 2007 Asian Winter Games.
As one of the region's oldest urban centers, the city played a significant strategic role during the Ming and Qing dynasties. Naval shipyards were established here in the 17th century, leading to its official founding as a fortified settlement in 1673. The Qing Kangxi Emperor visited the area in 1682, inspiring its enduring poetic epithet. Nearby in Longtan District lies Wulajie Old City, a Qing-era walled town that historically gathered local goods for the imperial court and served as a sturgeon fishing location for the emperor.
The city's natural layout is defined by its surrounding geography, nestled among a hilly landscape framed by four notable peaks. North Mountain sits to the west, Long Tan Mountain to the east, Zhuque Mountain to the north, and Turtle Mountain to the south. Together with the winding Songhua River, these physical features create a distinctive spatial pattern. Southeast of the main urban expanse, visitors can explore the waters and scenery of Songhua Lake.
During January and February, the area attracts visitors eager to view natural rime ice, which forms when water vapor from the unfrozen Songhua River freezes on tree branches in extreme sub-zero temperatures. Travelers can also tour North Hill Park, home to several historic Buddhist temples visited by the Qianlong Emperor, or visit the Meteorite Museum to see the largest recorded stony meteorite fall. Winter sports are widely practiced across the region, featuring several ski facilities such as Beidahu and Lake Songhua, along with activities like skating, sledding, snowboarding, and winter swimming.
Jilin City experiences a four-season, monsoon-influenced humid continental climate with long, frigid winters and warm, humid summers. Most annual precipitation occurs between June and August. The city is accessible by rail through Jilin railway station, which offers high-speed and standard routes to major hubs including Beijing, Harbin, and Changchun. Road connections include National Highway 202 and the G12 Expressway, while air travelers utilize Changchun Longjia International Airport, situated roughly 76 kilometers away.
