Why Meizhou
Meizhou is a prefecture-level city in the northeastern portion of Guangdong Province, China, sharing borders with Fujian and Jiangxi provinces. Encompassing an area of over fifteen thousand square kilometers, the administrative region consists of the Meijiang and Meixian districts, Xingning City, and five surrounding counties. Defined by a varied geology of granite, sandstone, and limestone, this mountainous destination features fresh air and landscape carved by the Mei and Han rivers.
Human settlement in the territory stretches back to the Neolithic era, evidenced by unearthed stone implements, ancient kilns from the Zhou dynasty, and Warring States bells. Historically referred to as Chengxiang and later Jiaying, the region received the name Meizhou during the Song dynasty, drawing inspiration from the Mei River and local plum blossoms. Celebrated as a land of plum blossoms, the surrounding hills bloom every spring with white, green, and flowering plum trees whose harvested fruit is turned into preserved snacks.
Meizhou is recognized as a principal center of Hakka culture, with its local speech serving as the standard dialect for Hakka Chinese. The ancestral Hakka migrated to these southern mountains centuries ago, and a subsequent history of overseas migration led returning travelers to fund historic homes throughout the area. Visitors can explore cultural landmarks dating to the Tang dynasty, ancestral residences of prominent historical figures, and traditional Hakka sights. Popular outdoor pursuits include trekking at the Yannanfei Tea Garden and viewing sprawling pomelo orchards across the countryside from late summer into autumn.
Local culinary specialties highlight authentic Hakka traditions, featuring salt-baked chicken alongside stuffed tofu, a dish originally created by southern migrants as an alternative to flour dumplings. Preserved beef and ginger candies are also widely enjoyed. Meizhou has a humid subtropical climate with short, mild winters and hot, humid summers, experiencing its highest rainfall between April and June. The city is accessible via major state highways, regular and high-speed train services connecting to regional hubs, regional flights at Meizhou Meixian Airport, and local riverways.
