Why Kano

Kano is the capital of Kano State and the second-largest city in Nigeria. Located in the savanna region south of the Sahel, this historic destination has served as a central commercial hub and settlement for millennia. Known as the centre of commerce, it was historically a vital stop along trans-Saharan trade routes and remains a major metropolis where the Hausa language serves as a regional lingua franca.

Situated at an elevation of 481 meters above sea level, Kano lies near the point where the Kano and Challawa rivers join to form the Hadejia River. The area experiences a tropical savanna climate with high temperatures for most of the year, peaking in April. The period from December to February offers milder morning temperatures, while most of the annual rain falls between June and September.

First established around Dala Hill, Kano evolved from early iron-working settlements into one of the medieval Hausa kingdoms. Islam arrived in the 11th century or earlier, contributing to the city's growing wealth. Over time, Kano became a major emirate under the Sokoto Caliphate before transitioning through British administration and eventually becoming a state capital in modern Nigeria.

The city's historic core holds numerous cultural landmarks. Key sights include Dala Hill, the Gidan Rumfa palace, the Gidan Makama Museum, and the Great Mosque of Kano. Visitors can also see the bustling Kurmi Market as well as surviving portions of the Ancient Kano City Walls and their historic gates.

Kano's craft traditions and economic heritage are displayed at famous sites like the Kofar Mata Dye Pits and the groundnut pyramids. Built on a legacy of indigo dyeing, leatherwork, weaving, and agricultural trade, the city continues to serve as an important commercial and service center.
