Why Abuja

Abuja serves as the capital city of Nigeria, positioned at the geographic center of the country within the Federal Capital Territory. Established to promote national unity and relieve overcrowding in the former capital of Lagos, it officially became the seat of the federal government in December 1991. The terrain is dramatically defined by massive natural rock formations, most notably Aso Rock, a 400-meter monolith around which key government institutions are clustered, and the 725-meter Zuma Rock situated just to the north along the road to Kaduna.

Designed as a modern administrative hub, Abuja is structured into concentric developmental phases and more than 50 distinct districts. The initial city master plan was formulated in the late 1970s by International Planning Associates, with detailed layouts of the central core crafted by architect Kenzo Tange. As a prominent political and diplomatic center on the African continent, the city hosts the headquarters of the Economic Community of West African States, regional offices for OPEC, and numerous foreign embassies, while also functioning as a major international conference venue.

The innermost sector, Phase 1, contains several of the city's most prominent districts. The Central Business District forms the main civic spine, extending westward from Aso Rock toward the Old City gate. This area includes the Three Arms Zone—housing the executive, legislative, and judicial branches of government—as well as Eagle Square, the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, and the Millennium Tower complex. Distinctive religious landmarks, including the Nigerian National Mosque and the Nigerian National Christian Centre, stand opposite one another along Independence Avenue. To the east lies the secure Asokoro District, which houses the Presidential Palace, diplomatic residences, and state guest lodges.

Southwest of the central core, the Garki District operates as a major commercial and administrative center organized into numbered areas. Visitors to Garki can find notable institutions such as the Abuja International Conference Centre, the General Post Office, the Cyprian Ekwensi Arts & Culture Centre, and the media complex at Radio House. The area around Gimbiya Street provides a contrast within the district, shifting from a business zone on weekdays to an entertainment hub during evenings and weekends.

Air travel to the capital is serviced by Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, situated over 40 kilometers west of Aso Rock in Phase 5 near the University of Abuja. The municipality is enclosed and traversed by an interconnected grid of expressways and federal highways, offering straightforward road connections to the surrounding countryside and neighboring Nigerian states.
