Why Zhangjiakou
Zhangjiakou is a prefecture-level city situated in northwestern Hebei province in Northern China. The municipality shares borders with Beijing to the southeast, Inner Mongolia to the north and west, and Shanxi to the southwest. Historically nicknamed the Northern Gate of Beijing due to its commanding strategic location along major travel arteries, the territory has long functioned as a critical crossing point between Hebei, Inner Mongolia, and broader northwestern China.
The physical landscape of Zhangjiakou varies considerably from south to north. The southern territory consists largely of cultivated agricultural land, while the northern sector features the elevated Bashang region, a grassland expanse that forms part of the Mongolian Plateau. The city boasts a forest coverage rate of 37 percent, earning it designation as a National Forest City. Additionally, it records the cleanest air and lowest particulate pollution among Chinese cities situated north of the Yellow River, while harnessing extensive regional wind and solar energy resources.
Inhabited since prehistoric times, the region contains ancient Paleolithic sites such as Nihewan, Xiaochangliang, and Maquangou. Throughout Chinese history, the area served as a contested military outpost for successive dynasties and kingdoms, resulting in the construction of frontier defenses. Remnants of Great Wall fortifications dating back to the Qin, Yan, Zhao, and Northern Wei eras are scattered across the landscape. Historical heritage also includes the site of Jinlianchuan, named for its golden lotus blossoms, and the remains of royal gardens constructed during the Liao Dynasty.
Visitors to the region can explore significant landmark structures, notably Dajingmen, a historic gate that serves as a major junction along the Great Wall. The municipal area comprises several urban districts—including Qiaoxi, Qiaodong, Xuanhua, Xiahuayuan, and Chongli—alongside surrounding rural counties. In modern times, Zhangjiakou achieved international prominence when it served as one of the host cities for the 2022 Winter Olympic Games.
