Why Anqing
Anqing is a prefecture-level city situated along the northern bank of the Yangtze River in southwestern Anhui province, China. Positioned in a narrow section of the Yangtze Plain between the Dabie Mountains to the north and the Huang Mountains to the south, the prefecture encompasses over 13,000 square kilometers, with an urban region spanning around 821 square kilometers. The local geography is marked by extensive water systems, including the Wanhe River and its tributaries, alongside major lakes such as Huating Lake, Qili Lake, and Caizi Lake.
The city holds a prominent position in regional cultural history as the birthplace of Huangmei opera, a recognized traditional performing art that gained widespread national popularity from the 1950s onward. Anqing's local speech blends Gan, Wu, and Lower Yangtze Mandarin, a linguistic tradition that historically influenced accents and nuances within Peking opera. Additionally, the city is noted as the birthplace of Chen Duxiu, a founding figure and early leader of the Chinese Communist Party.
Human history in the surrounding landscape extends to prehistoric times, marked by Neolithic archaeological sites including Xuejiagang and Sunjiacheng. Over centuries of dynastic rule, administrative jurisdictions transitioned through the Zhou, Qin, Han, and Song eras. In 1147, the name Anqing—translating to peaceful and auspicious—was created from military administrative titles. The city later served as the provincial capital of Anhui starting in 1760, played a pivotal strategic role during the 19th-century Taiping Rebellion, and subsequently developed into an open treaty port for foreign trade.
In contemporary times, Anqing functions as an economic center for the agricultural plains north of the Yangtze and serves as a major trade hub for tea grown in adjacent mountain ranges. Its modern industrial footprint features oil refining, petrochemical manufacturing, vehicle components, textiles, and building materials. Regional transport is supported by shipping along the Yangtze River, alongside railway and expressway links that connect the city to major urban centers such as Hefei, Nanchang, and Wuhan.
Anqing experiences a four-season, monsoon-influenced humid subtropical climate with an annual mean temperature of 17.2 °C (63.0 °F). Winters are damp and chilly, occasionally bringing freezing nighttime temperatures caused by cold Siberian winds. Summers are hot and humid, frequently exceeding 35 °C (95 °F). Precipitation reaches its peak during the midsummer plum rains, while winter rainfall remains light, contributing to an annual average of roughly 1,831 hours of bright sunshine.
