Why Neijiang
Neijiang is a prefecture-level destination situated in the southeastern portion of Sichuan Province, China. Positioned along the banks of the Tuo River, the city occupies a central location directly midway between Chengdu and Chongqing. Standing at the core of southern Sichuan's transit network, Neijiang functions as a primary transportation hub and food-processing center, with an urban core featuring districts like Shizhong and Dongxing.
Historically, the locality gained prominence during medieval times for its salt production before developing into a major sugarcane cultivation hub, earning it the reputation as the sugar capital of Sichuan. Over time, its economic landscape broadened into engineering, electronics, chemical production, construction materials, and consumer goods. The city houses Neijiang Normal College and serves as the hometown of Tian Ye, a mathematician, as well as Zhang Daqian, one of the twentieth century's most notable Chinese artists.
Travelers visiting the surrounding area can view significant historical architecture. Located in Longchang, the Longchang Archway Complex contains 17 traditional stone archways spanning from the Southern Song to the Republic of China eras, though most were constructed during the Qing Dynasty. These structures stand approximately 11 meters high and 9 meters wide, featuring detailed carvings of traditional motifs and historical figures. Another destination is Shengshui Temple, previously named Xingci Chan Monastery. Founded during the Xiantong period of the Tang Dynasty, this complex spans roughly 20,000 square meters and includes the Hall of Heavenly Kings, Mahavira Hall, Sutra Library, Yuanjue Hall, Ancient Great Compassion Hall, and Dharma Hall.
Additional historical interest is found at the Zizhong Confucian Temple and Martial Temple, two Qing Dynasty sites situated about 100 meters apart. The Confucian Temple displays a quadrangle compound layout with glazed tile roofs characteristic of southern Chinese architecture, housing the Dacheng Hall, Chongsheng Shrine, Bell Tower, and Drum Tower. The nearby Martial Temple features the Guansheng Hall, Wuxing Hall, and Sanyi Shrine. Neijiang is connected by rail via Neijiang railway station, which sits along the Chengdu–Chongqing line and serves as the origin point for the Neijiang–Kunming railway, while high-speed services operate through Neijiang North railway station along the intercity route.
