Why Siping
Siping, historically known as Sipingjie and Ssupingkai, is a prefecture-level city located in western Jilin Province, China, near the borders with Liaoning Province and Inner Mongolia. Covering an area of 14,323 square kilometers, the territory marks a transition between southeastern hilly landscapes and the flat Songliao Plain to the northwest. According to the 2020 census, Siping has a population of 1,814,733 inhabitants and ranks as the third-largest city in the province.
Human activity in the area spans approximately 3,000 years, extending back to the Shang dynasty, with the Kingdom of Yan Ruins indicating Han Chinese settlement during the Spring and Autumn period. A variety of historical groups, including the Fuyu, Goguryeo, Khitans, Jurchen, Mongols, Manchus, and Koreans, left behind cultural relics across the region, notably at Hanzhou, Xinzhou, and Yehe. Yehe Town within the prefecture is also recognized as the ancestral home of two Qing dynasty figures, Empress Dowager Cixi and Empress Dowager Longyu.
Siping remained a small locality until 1902, when the opening of a railway line between Changchun and the port of Dalian turned it into a regional commercial center. The transit infrastructure expanded under the South Manchuria Railway Company after 1907, followed by rail links to Baicheng in 1923 and to Tonghua and the Korean Peninsula in 1939. During the Japanese occupation after 1932, local agriculture-based processing developed alongside a synthetic petroleum refinery. The city was nearly destroyed during several major military campaigns of the Chinese Civil War between 1945 and 1949 before undergoing rapid reconstruction.
Siping experiences a four-season, monsoon-influenced humid continental climate with an annual mean temperature of 7.12 °C. Winters from November to March are long, cold, windy, and dry under the influence of the Siberian anticyclone, averaging −13.2 °C in January. Summers are warm and humid due to prevailing southeasterly monsoon winds, averaging 23.7 °C in July, with most annual rainfall concentrated from June to August. Autumn and winter feature particularly clear skies, contributing to 2,684 annual hours of bright sunshine.
The city serves as an important transportation hub in Jilin Province, crossed by major regional rail lines and served by both Siping Railway Station and Siping East Railway Station on the Harbin–Beijing high-speed rail corridor. A comprehensive road network includes several expressways and a first-grade ring road connecting to National Roads 102 and 303. Siping sits about 550 kilometers from Dalian's shipping center and is located one hour from international airports in Changchun and Shenyang.
