Why Jinzhong

Jinzhong is a prefecture-level city positioned in the eastern-central region of Shanxi province in the People's Republic of China. Sharing an eastern border with Hebei province, the area was historically known as Yuci. In 1999, following urban growth, the former Jinzhong Prefecture was officially reorganized into a prefecture-level city, at which point its seat became Yuci District.

The city forms part of an expansive conurbation alongside Taiyuan, the capital of Shanxi province. Yuci District maintains increasingly close urban connections with Taiyuan, forming a shared built-up area. According to the 2020 national census, Jinzhong recorded a total population of 3,379,498 people, with 1,226,617 residents located within the urban districts of Yuci and Taigu.

Demographic data from the 2020 census shows that males account for 50.89 percent of the population, while females represent 49.11 percent. In terms of age structure across the city, children aged 0 to 14 make up 16.42 percent of residents, individuals between 15 and 59 years old account for 64.62 percent, and people aged 60 and above comprise 18.96 percent, with 12.99 percent of the total population being over 65 years old.

Historically and culturally, the municipality contains subdivisions such as Lingshi County and Taigu District. Among its notable cultural sights, the city features several Shanxi Courtyard Houses. These historic businessmen's residences are recognized as outstanding examples of ancient civilian architecture. Internationally and domestically, Jinzhong holds official sister city partnerships with Jinhua in Zhejiang province, Szolnok in Hungary, Quảng Nam Province in Vietnam, Vals in Austria, Provins in France, and Luang Prabang in Laos.

Jinzhong experiences a continental, monsoon-influenced semi-arid climate designated as Köppen BSk. Winters are cold and very dry, while summers are hot and humid. Monthly 24-hour average temperatures range from −5.5 °C in January to 24.2 °C in July, producing an annual mean of 10.39 °C. Shaped by the East Asian Monsoon, the location receives 388 millimetres of precipitation annually, with over two-thirds of the rainfall concentrated between June and September. For rail transit, the area is served by the Taiyuan–Jiaozuo Railway.
