Why Anshan
Located in the central-southeastern part of Liaoning province in northeastern China, Anshan is a major inland city situated about 92 kilometers south of the provincial capital, Shenyang. The city takes its name from a nearby mountain to the south whose profile resembles a horse saddle. Known historically as a prominent center for heavy industry and mining, Anshan earned the nickname "Steel Metropolis" due to its extensive manufacturing history and facilities such as the Anshan Iron and Steel Group.
The geography of the region transitions from the flat, fertile plains of the Liao River basin in the west to the rugged, elevated terrain of the Qian Mountains along its southeastern edges. The western lowlands feature extensive arable land famous for cultivating Nanguo pears. In contrast, the eastern highlands contain Qianshan National Park, a key scenic area in the region. Anshan is also extraordinarily rich in mineral wealth, holding substantial global reserves of magnesite and talcum alongside vast deposits of iron ore, coal, and jade.
Human settlement in the area dates to prehistoric times, with local iron mining and metallurgy spanning more than 2,000 years. During the Ming Dynasty, Anshan served as a travel post with inns for officials before being fortified in 1587. The city suffered destruction during the Boxer Rebellion and the Russo-Japanese War, after which it developed into a major Japanese-controlled industrial base in the early 20th century. Following World War II, Soviet occupation, and the Chinese Civil War, the city's industrial infrastructure was rebuilt, establishing Anshan as a central hub for China's steel production.
Alongside its industrial background, the city offers distinct cultural and natural sights for visitors. Travelers can explore the mountainous landscapes of Qianshan National Park or view a massive Buddha statue sculpted from the largest single jade stone ever discovered, which was sourced from the local Xiuyan area.
Anshan experiences a four-season, monsoon-influenced humid continental climate with hot, humid summers and long, cold, dry winters. Rain is concentrated heavily in July and August. The city is accessible by rail through the central Anshan railway station, by two major highways connecting it to Dalian and Shenyang, and via Shenyang's airport located approximately 90 kilometers to the north.
