Why Bengbu
Bengbu is a major urban municipality situated in northern Anhui Province along the Huai River, positioned on the southeastern edge of the North China Plain. The city's name translates to Clam Wharf, a reference to its historical background as a regional center for freshwater pearl harvesting. Geographically split by the river, the core urban landscape features greater Bengbu on the southern bank and little Bengbu to the north. Dragon Lake borders the eastern side of the main urban zone, adjacent to an academic district hosting multiple institutions of higher education.
Historically, the Huai River area was inhabited by the Huaiyi peoples, who were later assimilated into neighboring states during the Spring and Autumn period. Archaeological excavations near Fengyang uncovered ancient royal tombs associated with the historical Zhongli State. Over the centuries, the location developed into a key transportation and distribution hub for the Huai River basin. In modern history, the surrounding region hosted significant military engagements during the Huaihai Campaign of the Chinese Civil War.
Today, Bengbu stands as a prominent industrial and agricultural center within the province. Food processing forms a central component of its local economy, complemented by chemical, electronic, engineering, and textile manufacturing. The area is also recognized for specialized glass production, including advanced ultra-thin touch glass and flexible foldable glass. Local agricultural output includes peanuts, aquatic produce, vegetables, and livestock, while surrounding counties are recognized for Huaiyuan pomegranates and Wuhe crabs. The local culinary traditions align closely with northern Anhui and nearby regional styles.
Visitors to the area can observe the contrast between the city's riverbanks, explore the environs around Dragon Lake, or attend events at the local Bengbu Stadium, a 15,000-seat facility primarily utilized for football matches. Bengbu experiences a four-season humid subtropical climate shaped by monsoon patterns, marked by cool winters and hot, humid summers, with the majority of rainfall occurring between June and August.
As a transportation crossroad, Bengbu is well connected via regional transit networks. The city is served by the Jinghu Railway, providing regular rail services to major metropolitan hubs such as Beijing and Shanghai, alongside high-speed rail connections at Bengbu South Railway Station. Local travel is supported by regional air transport facilities, including Bengbu Tenghu Airport situated north of the Huai River.
