Why Leshan
Leshan is a prefecture-level city in central Sichuan Province, China, situated approximately 120 kilometers from the provincial capital of Chengdu. Positioned at the confluence of the Dadu, Min, and Qingyi rivers, this regional transport hub marks a transition from the Sichuan Basin to southwestern mountainous terrain. It is widely recognized for its UNESCO World Heritage landmarks and its distinct local food culture.
With written historical records tracing back to around 700 BC during the Kai Ming dynasty of the Shu Kingdom, the city was historically known as Jiading and Jiazhou. Over the centuries, its administrative status grew, eventually becoming one of Sichuan's major urban centers. During the Second Sino-Japanese War, Leshan served as a secure repository for historic treasures moved from Beijing's Forbidden City between 1939 and 1947, while also hosting several relocated academic institutions.
The city's main historic sight is the Leshan Giant Buddha, known as the largest stone-carved Buddha statue in the world. Next to this monument lies the Oriental Buddha Park, which contains thousands of Buddha statue reproductions and thematic carvings. The administrative area also encompasses Mount Emei, another World Heritage site, and the Shawan District, where the ancestral home of writer Guo Moruo is preserved. Additional notable locations include the Reclining Buddha, Mahaoya Tomb, Luocheng Ancient Town, and the Thousand Buddha Rock along the Jiajiang River.
Leshan's regional culture features a unique dialect that retains classical entering tones, making it distinct from surrounding Sichuan speech. The city is renowned for its diverse street food scene, which includes items such as sweet-skinned duck (Tianpiya), smoked duck (Yanxunya), skewered chicken in chili broth (Boboji), savory flatbreads with beef (Ka Bing), silken tofu custard broth (Doufunao), and herbal beef broth known as Qiaojiao Niurou.
Leshan experiences a monsoon-influenced humid subtropical climate with short, mild, and relatively dry winters alongside long, warm, and humid summers. Over 70 percent of the annual rainfall occurs between June and September. Travelers reach the city via the G0512 Chengdu–Leshan Expressway, the Chengdu–Mianyang–Leshan intercity railway, or the Chengdu–Guiyang high-speed line, arriving at the Leshan Railway Station transit hub.
