Why Zhenjiang

Zhenjiang is a prefecture-level city in Jiangsu Province, China, positioned along the southern bank of the Yangtze River near its intersection with the Grand Canal. Situated within the Yangtze River Delta transit corridor, the region lies directly opposite Yangzhou to the north and sits between Nanjing to the west and Changzhou to the east. The city encompasses three urban districts alongside three county-level cities, set against a backdrop of the Ning-Zhen Hills.

Inhabited since prehistoric times, the area was an early site for rice cultivation in the lower Yangtze River valley. Historically known by names including Zhufang, Jingkou, Runzhou, and Southern Xu Province, Zhenjiang developed into a strategic military outpost, a major transit stop along regional canals, and eventually served as the provincial capital of Jiangsu from 1928 to 1949. Over the centuries, the city flourished as a producer of fine silks and silverware, and the 11th-century scientist Shen Kuo authored his Dream Pool Essays while living on its outskirts.

Cultural landmarks and culinary traditions are central to the city's identity. The local Jinshan Temple is famous for its connection to the legend of Madame White Snake. On the edge of the city, a natural park spring has been renowned since the Tang Dynasty for tea preparation and is known as the First Spring under Heaven. Zhenjiang is also internationally recognized for its fragrant black vinegar, alongside regional specialties such as crab cream buns, Chinkiang pork, and pickled vegetables.

Zhenjiang features a humid subtropical climate with cold winters, hot and humid summers, and increased rainfall during the East Asian monsoon. The city remains a significant transport hub and inland port, supporting industries such as food processing, paper pulp manufacturing, and the distribution of grain, cotton, oils, and lumber. It is connected by rail to Nanjing and Shanghai, and river transport is facilitated by the Port of Zhenjiang as well as major crossings like the Runyang Yangtze River Bridge and the Taizhou Yangtze River Bridge.
