Why Liupanshui
Liupanshui is a prefecture-level city situated in western Guizhou Province in southwestern China, positioned along the terraces of the Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau. Its compound name is formed from the initial characters of three constituent territories: Liuzhi, Panzhou, and Shuicheng. Because of its elevated terrain and low latitude, the city enjoys mild winters alongside exceptionally temperate summers, earning it a widespread regional reputation as a cool summer retreat.
Belonging to a humid subtropical monsoon climate zone, the region maintains a comfortable average annual temperature of 15 °C. Winter temperatures in January average between 3 and 6.3 °C, while July temperatures generally range between 19.8 and 22 °C. Historically, this territory served as the seat of the ancient Yelang tribal confederation, which once exerted control across parts of modern-day Guizhou, Hunan, Sichuan, and Yunnan. Today, the area is home to numerous indigenous ethnic minority groups, including the Yi, Miao, Buyi, Bai, Hui, Gelao, and Shui.
Visitors to Liupanshui are drawn primarily to its karst topography and minority cultural traditions. Prominent natural sites include Danxia Mountain, which was described by the Ming Dynasty travel writer Xu Xiake, and the natural arch known as Tiansheng Bridge. Within Yushe National Park lies the flat-topped Jiucai Ping Scenic Zone, which features the highest elevation in Guizhou Province at roughly 2,900 meters. The peak is renowned for its garlic chive blossoms, dramatic rock formations, sunrises, and cloud seas. Other local sites include the underground lake inside Qilin Cave Park, the Shuicheng Francois's Leaf Monkey Nature Reserve, and the Guizhou Third Front Construction Museum.
Regional gastronomy plays a central role in the local travel experience. Notable dishes include lamb rice noodles, fried potatoes, and aromatic lotus leaf glutinous rice chicken. The municipality is also known for Shuicheng Hot Pot, which holds municipal intangible cultural heritage status, and Panxian ham, a cured specialty aged up to three years or more. Diners can also sample Gua Lu Rice, a dish prepared with a wide variety of ingredient combinations.
Liupanshui serves as a significant transit hub within southwestern China. Multiple major railways intersect in the municipality, including routes connecting to Sichuan and Yunnan provinces. For air travel, the city is served by Liupanshui Yuezhao Airport, located roughly 15 kilometers by road from the urban center.
