Why Tianshui
Tianshui is a major prefecture-level city in southeastern Gansu province, ranking as the second-largest urban center in the region behind Lanzhou. Nestled within the valley of the Jie River—a main tributary of the Wei River—the territory sits directly at the geographical boundary separating the Qinling Mountains from the Loess Plateau. According to local legend, the name of the city stems from a heavenly lake that maintained a constant size throughout the year.
The region possesses a deep historical legacy tied to the early development of imperial China. Originally associated with the expansion of the Qin state, the area later became a vital junction along the Northern Silk Road during the Han Dynasty, linking the Wei River route onward to Chang'an. Travelers and local Buddhists carved the famous Maijishan Grottoes between the Wei and Song dynasties, filling the cave complex with thousands of statues representing figures such as Buddha and early forms of Guanyin. Over the centuries, the settlement went through several administrative name changes, serving as Hanyang during the Wei period and Shanggui during the Tang Dynasty.
Visitors to Tianshui can explore key heritage locations including the Maijishan Grottoes, the Fuxi Temple, the Yuquan Temple, and the ancient Dadiwan Site. Culinary traditions play a major role in local life. A signature breakfast dish known as Guagua features a sticky, cooked buckwheat meal seasoned with chili oil, garlic paste, vinegar, mustard, and sesame paste. The city is also famous for its local hot pot, which derives a distinctively numbing and spicy profile from regionally grown Gangu chili peppers and Maiji peppercorns.
Tianshui experiences a four-season climate characterized by cold, dry winters and warm, somewhat humid summers, with most rainfall occurring from June through September. Due to the mild weather, the surrounding district is a major producer of apples alongside its industrial manufacturing base. The city is accessible through the Tianshui Maijishan Airport, high-speed rail services at Tianshui South station, long-distance expressways, and a local tram line that connects the main railway station to the downtown district.
