Why Weihai
Weihai is a major coastal seaport and prefecture-level city situated on the eastern tip of the Shandong Peninsula in eastern China. Bounded by the Yellow Sea to the east and Yantai to the west, it represents the closest mainland Chinese municipality to South Korea. The urban core and its surrounding coastline are bordered by water on three sides, with the main harbor naturally sheltered by Liugong Island. Its broader administrative area includes the prominent headland of Chengshantou at the peninsula's easternmost point, alongside the primary Huancui District, Wendeng District, and the county-level cities of Rongcheng and Rushan.
Originally inhabited by Dongyi tribes and absorbed into early Chinese states, the area operated primarily as a small fishing settlement for centuries. In 1398, the Ming dynasty designated it as a strategic military outpost named Weihaiwei to counter coastal pirate raids, constructing defensive perimeter walls shortly thereafter. The territory was later leased to Great Britain from 1898 to 1930, functioning with its administrative center at Port Edward in modern-day Huancui District and hosting a British naval facility on Liugong Island. Following subsequent foreign occupations and regional reorganizations, the settlement was established as a prefecture-level city in 1987.
Maritime history and international ties shape the local cultural environment. A prominent sight in the city is a full-scale replica of the ironclad battleship Dingyuan, which serves as a floating museum ship and memorial honoring Chinese veterans of the First Sino-Japanese War. Owing to its location directly across the sea, Weihai maintains active commercial and tourist links with South Korea, supporting a notable Korean business community and welcoming frequent international travelers.
Weihai features a northern temperate monsoon climate moderated by the Yellow Sea, producing milder seasonal shifts than inland areas at similar latitudes. Winter conditions in January average −0.5 °C, while summer temperatures in August average 25.3 °C, with more than two-thirds of annual rain occurring between June and September. Access to the region is facilitated by Weihai Dashuipo International Airport, which offers flights to major domestic cities and Seoul-Incheon. The city is also connected via the Qingdao–Rongcheng intercity high-speed railway, long-distance conventional rail services to Beijing and Jinan, and a local public transit system operating over fifty bus routes.
