Why Xiangtan
Xiangtan is a prefecture-level city situated along the lower section of the Xiang River in east-central Hunan Province, China. Positioned in the south-central region of the country, it forms part of the Changzhutan City Cluster alongside neighboring Changsha and Zhuzhou. The municipality's name stems from local river features, joining "Xiang" for the river with "Tan," a word describing a deep pool or eddy. Historical explanations attribute the name to a bend in the waterway or to the Zhao Eddy, an ancient whirlpool named after King Zhao of Zhou.
Human settlement in the area dates to the third millennium BC, supported by artifacts from the Daxi culture, Shang dynasty bronzewares, and Warring States tombs. The Eastern Wu kingdom founded a city in the western territory, and the Tang dynasty officially formed Xiangtan County in 749 around the modern Yisu River. Favorable water and overland routes established the location as a major trading center during the Northern Song dynasty. It further prospered in the Ming and Qing eras through the distribution of rice and traditional medicinal ingredients, acting as a key transit hub for commerce between Canton, Shanghai, and Wuhan.
Administratively, the territory encompasses Yuetang District, Yuhu District, Xiangtan County, and the county-level cities of Xiangxiang and Shaoshan. The region is notable as the birthplace of several prominent figures, including political leaders Mao Zedong, Liu Shaoqi, and Peng Dehuai, as well as painter Qi Baishi and general Zeng Guofan. Higher education institutions in the area include Xiangtan University, Hunan University of Science and Technology, and the Hunan Institute of Engineering.
Visitors to the region often travel to Shaoshan to see the former home of Mao Zedong. Another local sight is Zhaoshan, a tree-covered mountain frequented by local residents. Regional culinary items include lotus seeds and soy sauce, alongside a four-hundred-year-old tradition of processing and chewing areca nuts, a practice originally used for disease prevention.
Xiangtan features a humid subtropical climate characterized by long, hot summers and cool, damp, overcast winters with occasional light snowfall. The region records an annual mean temperature of 17.4 °C, ranging from a January average of 5.1 °C to a July average of 29.1 °C. Transportation into and around the city is provided by roadways, railways, and river navigation, with shuttle buses offering direct service to Changsha Huanghua International Airport.
