Why Mudanjiang
Mudanjiang is a prefecture-level city located in the southeastern part of Heilongjiang province in China, serving as the province's southernmost prefecture. Situated along the Mudan River—which translates as the Peony River—the city sits approximately 248 kilometers from Vladivostok, Russia. It shares eastern borders with Russia's Primorsky Krai, while also bordering the neighboring Chinese prefectures of Harbin, Jixi, Qitaihe, and Yanbian in Jilin province.
The region's geography consists mostly of mountains and hills, maintaining an average elevation of 230 meters. The terrain extends from the low-altitude border area of Suifenhe City up to Zhangguangcai Mountain at 1,686.9 meters, with the central territory occupying the Hegu Basin and the eastern edge rising toward the Changbai Mountains. Mudanjiang experiences a monsoon-influenced humid continental climate with hot, humid summers, short spring and autumn seasons, and very cold, dry winters. Because of its basin location, the city is sheltered from harsh winds, making its winter temperatures milder than those in much of the rest of the province.
Inhabited over 2,300 years ago by the Sushen people, the region has a long history. Around 755 AD during the Tang dynasty, the Balhae kingdom created its upper capital near Lake Jingpo to the south. Development transformed from a small village setting after Imperial Russia built a station for the Chinese Eastern Railway in 1903. Merchants from Denmark, France, Britain, and Russia subsequently opened commercial agencies, leading to rapid expansion. The city grew significantly under Japanese occupation in the 1930s under the name Botankou before Soviet forces captured it in 1945.
Tourism and light manufacturing serve as economic pillars for Mudanjiang, along with industries such as papermaking, pharmaceuticals, forestry, and petrochemicals. Historical and civic features include the 15,000-capacity Beishan Stadium, which is primarily used for association football matches. The city is also home to educational sites like Mudanjiang University and the garden-style campus of Mudanjiang Normal University.
As a regional transport hub, Mudanjiang is well connected by rail and highway networks. Mudanjiang Railway Station connects the Binsui and Tujia railway lines, providing train services to major Chinese cities including Beijing, Harbin, Dalian, Changchun, and Jinan. Road access is provided by the G10 Suifenhe-Manzhouli and G11 Hegang–Dalian expressways. Flight services are centered at Mudanjiang Hailang International Airport, the second largest airport in the province, which undergoes closures for renovation works.
