Why Ibadan
Ibadan serves as the capital of Oyo State and stands as the largest city by land area in Nigeria, boasting a metropolitan population of over four million residents. Positioned in the southwestern interior of the country roughly 120 kilometers northeast of Lagos, the city acts as a vital transit hub linking coastal zones to inland regions. Its geography features a prominent north-south ridge rising up to 275 meters above sea level within a tropical forest belt near the savanna border. Five local rivers, including the Ogunpa and Ona, along with bodies of water such as Lake Eleyele, naturally drain the surrounding terrain.
Established in 1829 as a defense camp at the edge of the forest, Ibadan evolved into a powerful 19th-century military republic that played a major role in regional trade and politics. Remains of its ancient protective walls can still be seen today. Over time, it grew into a major commercial and administrative hub, particularly after becoming a center for cocoa trading under colonial rule. Today, the city is a diverse urban center populated mainly by the Yoruba people alongside communities from across Nigeria, and it belongs to the UNESCO Global Network of Learning Cities.
The city is home to several historic landmarks and commercial districts. The central business area of Dugbe features West Africa's first skyscraper, Cocoa House, alongside several financial institutions. Perched atop Oke Aare, the 1936 Bower's Tower provides sweeping views across the metropolis, while the colonial-style Mapo Hall sits atop Mapo Hill. Cultural highlights include the Institute of African Studies museum, which exhibits historic bronze carvings, and Agodi Gardens, which features a botanical park alongside a zoological garden.
In addition to its historic sites, Ibadan hosts Nigeria's first university, the University of Ibadan, which houses a second zoological garden. The city is also home to the University College Hospital, Africa's pioneer television station, the Mokola Cultural Centre, and Obafemi Awolowo Stadium. Comprising eleven local government areas, the urban landscape expanded significantly during the mid-to-late twentieth century, spreading outward along major regional expressways.
Ibadan experiences a tropical wet and dry climate with fairly steady temperatures averaging around 26.5 degrees Celsius throughout the year. Its primary rainy season spans from March to October, punctuated by a brief precipitation lull in August and rainfall peaks in June and September. The dry season runs from November through February, bringing traditional harmattan winds to the region.
